The Staff Attorney will work with multiple legal team members, including other attorneys, legal fellows, Department of Justice (DOJ) Accredited Representatives, legal assistants, and/or legal interns as well as collaborate with our broader team. This person will provide legal representation through mentoring pro bono volunteer attorneys and through direct legal representation for HRI clients seeking the following relief: asylum, VAWA for survivors of domestic violence, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS), U or T visas, Temporary Protected Status (TPS), permanent residence, adjustment of status, and/or naturalization. The Staff Attorney will display competency and sensitivity in representing low socioeconomic and limited-English-proficient clients and in providing trauma-informed services. The Staff Attorney will be reporting to the Immigration Legal Services Director. Duties and ResponsibilitiesInterviews, counsels, and advises clients regarding benefits available to them under current immigration law.Informs clients of all requirements for the benefit sought and prepares clients’ cases for submission to Federal Government immigration agencies.Complete immigration applications for USCIS and EOIR as needed for clients.Conduct intake for clients, including youth. Provide all clients (including youth) with legal advice, risk assessments to ensure clients' informed decision making, case updates, routine check-ins, representation in person before EOIR as needed for court hearings, and representation in person before USCIS as needed for interviews.Mentor and work with Pro Bono attorneys.Effectively manage client cases to ensure proper and timely filing in compliance with all deadlines and immigration or state law requirements as needed for proper adjudication before EOIR and USCIS.Maintain effective and organized case management practices in compliance with HRI's internal procedures to ensure uniformity and clear structure in the maintenance of all cases.Provide community outreach through various events as needed.Additional ResponsibilitiesAssist in training and mentoring of interns, accredited representatives, and other staff as needed.Adheres to agency code of conduct, professional code of ethics and Texas Disciplinary Rules of Professional Conduct. Participate in professional development trainings to remain current on immigration law changes and continuously improve the advocacy and quality of legal services provided to all clients.Assist with collecting client data and tracking case outcomes and metrics as needed for grant and other reporting purposes. Other duties as assigned for programmatic or organizational needs.Qualifications Essential Job Qualifications: Juris Doctor and licensed to practice law in Texas.2 to 3 years of experience in immigration law.Bilingual language skills in Spanish are preferred. Spanish language skills will be evaluated as part of the interview processStrong organizational skills, having the ability to handle multiple priorities and deadlines. Ability to manage a high case load with strong time-management skills.Ability to address complex legal problems strategically, utilizing a variety of approaches, including litigation, policy advocacy, and communications as well as taking the initiative to conduct legal research and consult practice advisories.Strong research, writing, and analytical skills.
