Due to the professionalism and dedication of the entire team we are continuously recognized as safety leaders, most recently as a 2024 Gold Safety Award winner from the National Railroad Construction and Maintenance Association.  Job SummaryHeavy Equipment Mechanics are key members of FRC’s operations team, working with the Shop Manager to ensure all company equipment and vehicles are maintained and repaired as needed. We are willing to train a mechanic who has a working knowledge of heavy equipment, CDL trucks, hydraulic systems, and/or diesel engines and who is willing to learn more about the specific equipment utilized by FRC. Heavy Equipment Mechanics perform repairs and maintenance on-site at the FRC shop but may also travel to jobsites to troubleshoot and perform equipment repairs in the field. Overnight stays will be infrequent but may be required. The successful Heavy Equipment Mechanic will also ensure an understanding and adherence to all safety needs/regulations, will be a clear communicator, willing to work as part of a team, as well as able to work independently.  Job DutiesJob duties include, but are not limited to:Perform preventative maintenance and troubleshoot problems on heavy equipment and vehicles at the FRC shopTravel to FRC jobsites and other field locations to troubleshoot/repair, when necessaryOperate machinery such as welders and torches (fabricating skills helpful)Follow safety regulations/protocols in the shop and in the fieldReport unsafe conditions to supervisor and follow any other reporting protocolsOperate tools, equipment, and company vehicles in conformity with manufacturer requirements, FRC policies, safety requirements, and any site-specific regulationsAttend shop meetings, safety meetings, and other company meetings as scheduledComplete and submit service logs, accounting, payroll, and other administrative formsWork ConditionsThe primary work location will be the FRC equipment shop in Columbus, OH with both indoor and outdoor work/storage locationsAdditionally, travel to outdoor field locations in all types of weather will occur, as repairs are neededTravel may include a wide geographical area requiring overnight staysPersonal tools that can be used for field work are preferred, but not requiredField work may be performed in these locations: on or along railroad tracks that may be active during work times; on a railroad track bridge, elevated walkway, or other areas of bridge structure; near or in coal/mineral mine site locationsWork may expose Heavy Equipment Mechanic to dust, railroad train traffic, highway traffic, loud noises, slippery or uneven footingAppropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be used as required, which may include hard hat, safety glasses with side-shields, metatarsal guard safety work boots, etc.FRC will provide hard hats and safety glasses at no chargeIf metatarsal boots are required, they may be purchased through the company, with FRC paying 50% after the 1st 90 days of employmentPhysical requirements include: frequent standing, bending, lifting, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, and similar movements; continuous sitting during training, when completing paperwork, traveling to/from jobsites, and operating equipmentTypical work schedule for a Heavy Equipment Mechanic is Monday-Friday, 8-10 hours per day, with opportunity for some weekend and emergency work as neededRequired Qualifications18 years of age or olderAble to pass federal drug and alcohol testing (pre-hire, random, post-accident, for cause, client contractual, etc.)Knowledge of/experience with any of the following: heavy equipment, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, A/C systems, CDL vehicles, gasoline and diesel enginesWillingness to learn in areas of inexperienceFunction well in a team atmosphere: willing to take instruction and learn from/share knowledge with othersCan communicate clearly and effectively with other team members, FRC management and administration, customers, subcontractors, vendorsAbide by all safety regulations of FRC, customers, OSHA, MSHA, and FRAAttend all trainings/classes as scheduled by FRC and pass required exams, including but not limited to Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Safe Worker TrainingAble to perform work duties in conditions as described aboveBenefitsRate commensurate with experience and eligible for increases after successful 90-day orientation period.Signing bonus of $1,000 after 6 months of employment.Available after 30 days of employment:Group life, dental, vision, short/long-term disability insuranceIndividual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangement (ICHRA)- FRC pays 50% of cost, including for spouses/dependentsAvailable after 90 days of employmentOpportunities for merit and skill-based pay rate increasesOpportunities for paid trainings and certificationsPaid time off, including holidaysEmployer-funded guaranteed life insuranceAccess to AFLAC, LegalShield, and IDShield401KVehicle stipend if personal truck is used consistently for travel repairs
