Structural Field Engineer
VCA Structural is seeking a Field Engineer to support projects during construction and serve as a key link between the jobsite and the office. This role is focused on observing work in progress, identifying potential issues, and helping confirm that construction aligns with structural plans and design intent.
In addition to field work, this position supports Construction Administration efforts, including shop drawing reviews and RFI responses.
The Field Engineer will work closely with internal engineers, contractors, and inspectors to communicate field conditions, assist with RFIs and shop drawings, and help resolve issues in a practical and timely manner. This role requires a hands-on, solutions-oriented mindset and strong communication skills.
Key Responsibilities
Perform field observations to verify construction aligns with structural plans and design intent
Identify and document field issues, discrepancies, and non-conforming work
Prepare clear and concise field reports with supporting documentation
Assist with reviewing and responding to RFIs and field-related questions
Support the shop drawing review process
Communicate effectively with contractors, subcontractors, inspectors, and internal teams
Help troubleshoot and resolve field conditions and constructability issues
Coordinate between the jobsite and office to support timely follow-up and resolution
Manage multiple active projects while maintaining responsiveness to field needs
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
EIT required; PE preferred or in progress
2–5+ years of structural engineering experience, ideally with field exposure
Strong understanding of structural systems (wood, steel, concrete, masonry)
Ability to read and interpret structural drawings, shop drawings, and details
Familiarity with applicable codes (IBC, CBC, ASCE, ACI, AISC, NDS)
Strong communication and problem-solving skills
Technical Skills
Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, and Bluebeam preferred
Familiarity with structural analysis software (RISA, ETABS, RAM, SAFE, or similar)
Ability to clearly document and communicate field conditions

Pay: $75,000.00 - $95,000.00 per year
