Special Education Adaptive Physical Education ParaprofessionalA position has been declared open in the Weber School District for a part-time Special Education (SpEd) Adaptive Physical Education Paraprofessional for 5.75 hours per day (28.75 hours per week), 180 days (9 months) per year. Click here for a guide (WSD SSO required).Job DescriptionUnder general supervision, performs a variety of instructional program support services for students with disabilities. Provides support for Adapted Physical Education (A.P.E.) instructors and program; and performs related duties as required or assigned. The incumbent may be assigned duties in support of instructors in specialized small group classes or in support of the overall instructional program. Work guidelines and direct classroom supervision are provided by instructor(s) or the Adapted Physical Education Program, however, day-to-day activities require the use of initiative and judgment.Essential FunctionsAssists students during the performance of instructional activities which may involve assisted walking, getting on or off equipment, or in and out of wheelchairsAssists with two person transfers; must be able to lift up to 50 poundsCoordinates materials, equipment, facilities and supplies for classesSets up, installs, maintains and services equipment, materials and supplies used in classesTrains students and others in the safe and proper use of specialized physical education equipmentMaintains physical environment and condition of the facility and equipmentAnswers students' questions regarding class assignmentsParticipates in activities, specialized workshops and special eventsAttendance is an essential function of this position: Physical presence at the worksite is an essential function of this position. The role requires in-person collaboration, direct interaction with team members, other staff, students, and/or guardians, and access to on-site equipment and resources.Other FunctionsAssists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.QualificationsKnowledge of:Principles, theories, practices, methods and equipment common to group activities used in adapted physical educationSafety practices for individuals with disabilitiesBasic instructional methods and procedures suitable for individuals with physical disabilitiesTechniques for communicating with individuals of diverse academic, ethnic, socio-economic and cultural backgrounds including persons with disabilitiesSkill in:Operating and training others in the safe use of adapted equipment and procedures used in special education and adapted physical educationSafely lifting and two person transfer techniquesApplying and effectively explaining instructional methods and procedures in a manner that can be understood by individuals exhibiting a wide variety of communication and cognitive deficitsEffectively reading, understanding and prompting course materials to studentsEstablishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the workUnderstanding and following oral and written instructionsApplying basic emergency and first aid proceduresMaintaining a pleasant, calm demeanor in emergencies and remaining flexible, patient and compassionate with those contacted in the course of the workOther Requirements:Ability to lift up to 50 poundsMust possess sufficient strength and stamina in order to safely assist disabled students with walking, lifting and wheelchair transferringMust be able to assume and maintain a variety of postures (kneeling, squatting, bending, standing, and sitting) for extended periods of timeMust be able to move from sitting on floor to standing position repeatedlyMust be able to utilize quick body movements to maintain safetyWilling to participate in and utilize de-escalation techniques, if needed.Exercise good judgment and maintain confidentialityComply with school board policies and follow administrative proceduresPersonal vehicle and valid driver's licenseEducation and Experience:High school diploma or equivalent requiredMinimum one year of experience in instructional support services which has included working with the disabled population preferredCollege-level coursework in special education, adapted physical education, physical therapy or a closely related field is desirableWEBER SCHOOL DISTRICT IS AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER
