Job Description Title - Elementary Guidance CounselorReports To: Principal and Blount County Director for GuidanceFLSA Designation: ExemptJob Goal: To offer student counseling and comprehensive developmental guidance services in the area of personal, social, educational and, academic growth and development. To help students overcome problems that impede learning and develop a life plan that holds promise for personal fulfillment as mature and responsible men and women.Minimum Qualifications:A. A master's degree or higher from an accredited college or university with a Major in guidance and counseling.B. Must be hold or be eligible for valid teacher's certificate, with endorsement in counseling and guidance.C. At least three years of successful teaching experience.D. Alternatives to the above qualifications deemed appropriate and/or acceptable by the by the Board and the Alabama Department of Education.Skills and Physical Abilities: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.Regularly required to speak, listen, walk, stand, sit, use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms using a keyboard and video display.Basic computer knowledge and ability to use email, internet software, and library cataloging systems and inventory tools.May be required to stoop, kneel, lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, ability to focus, and peripheral vision.Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:1. Develop, implement and evaluate an annual school guidance and counseling plan in accordance with standards set forth by the State plan and commensurate with the local system plan.2. Define and interpret the guidance and counseling program to students, teachers, parents, administrators, and community members.3. Coordinate the registration of new students and provide them with an orientation to school procedures and the school's various opportunities for learning.4. Assist students in developing school curriculum plan and provide a method for documenting and reviewing the plan annually.5. Assist in the placement of individual students with special needs in appropriate educational situations.6. Coordinate the procedure for the security and maintenance of student's educational records.7. Coordinate the school's testing program. Provide informative reports from testing results for administrators, teachers, students and parents.8. Assist teachers in identifying and interpreting problems that interfere with a student's ability to learn.9. Provide individual and group counseling opportunities that may lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding and maturity.10. Establish effective working relationships with employers, agencies and other institutions that may be of benefit to teachers, parents and students.11. Participate in professional development, school and district meetings and training.12. Assume other appropriate duties assigned by the principal.13. Counsel with individual students and small groups in an effort to help students develop socially, emotionally and psychologically.14. Provide students an opportunity to talk about their educational, vocational and personal/social concerns.15. Conduct needs assessment to target topics for small group counseling.16. Meet and exceed the requirements for security and confidentiality in regards to student information according to FERPA guidelines and Blount County Security and Confidentiality Agreement and Responsible Use Policy, as well as any state of federal laws, guidelines or statues.17. Identify students in need of special services, placement, motivation, support, etc.18. Participate in curriculum development. Assist teachers and administrators in planning activities and programs which meet student needs.19. Maintain the highest level of security and confidentiality regarding any and all information gleaned in day-to-day activities regarding students and staff personally identifiable information, according to FERPA and Blount County Security Use guidelines as well as any and all state and federal statutes.20. Perform other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the school.In all professional and personal relations, the Counselor shall be held in observance of a course of conduct consistent with the ethics of the teaching profession.Evaluation:Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Certified Employees.Terms of employment: 187-daysDaily work schedule will be determined by the principal or his/her designee.
