Gifted Math Teacher (2026-2027 SY)

General Statement of Duties The Gifted Young Scholars Academy at L. Douglas Wilder Middle School provides a comprehensive and rigorous interdisciplinary educational opportunity for students in grades 6-8. Students must be identified gifted in the area of General Intellect to apply. In addition to mastery of foundational content and skills, students attending GYSA are expected to master advanced competencies across all content areas. The Academy will provide opportunities for leadership, inquiry-based learning, literacy and scientific analysis, service learning, arts integration, and problem-based learning that focuses on topics of strength and interest. This comprehensive instructional program is designed around the cognitive characteristics and learning styles of gifted children, providing an integrated curriculum incorporating focused reflection, interaction, and discussion. The successful candidate will be required to: Plan, organize and deliver instruction to meet individual and group learning needs utilizing state guidelines and division curriculum. Regularly exhibit considerable knowledge of learning theory and best practices. Consistently act in the best interests of students and model appropriate behavior in all professional interactions. Essential Duties Professional Expectations: Plans daily instructional activities for secondary students, demonstrating knowledge of subject matter and using state Standards of Learning and the curriculum of the district Uses current school and division data to plan instruction Design and implement pre-assessments, tiered tasks, open-ended questions, and problem-based learning experiences appropriate for gifted students. Develops formative and summative tests, using multiple tools to assess student learning on an ongoing basis, and alters instruction to meet group and individual needs Incorporate student choice, interest-based extensions, and advanced content to foster depth and complexity. Maintains order within the classroom and school with proactive classroom management and a well-organized learning environment Address the social-emotional needs of gifted learners, including perfectionism, asynchronous development, and peer dynamics. Maintains records of student performance and attendance, and communicates this effectively with students and their parents Selects, requisitions, and uses a variety of instructional materials to stimulate learning and meet the needs of all students Demonstrate cultural competency and a commitment to nurturing diverse gifted learners, including English learners and students from historically underrepresented populations. Communicates and coordinates instruction with other staff (special ed, gifted, remediation staff, etc.) relative to student learning Stays abreast of current gifted and educational trends and best practices as these relate to classroom instruction and effective schools Maintains professional manner when interacting with students, parents, patrons, community agencies and colleagues Incorporates and models appropriate use of technology to support instruction and student learning Performs other duties as assigned
