Director of Perfusion and Support Services
Job RequirementsGeneral Summary : Responsible for the oversight, leadership and management of Perfusion Services. This responsibility includes: selecting the appropriate equipment and techniques to be utilized; purchasing supplies and equipment and assuring periodic maintenance of the same; assuming responsibility for appropriate personnel and departmental management, including the development and implementation of policies and procedures, quality assurance measures and staff development; and performing those functions necessary for the support, treatment, measurement, and/or supplementation of the cardiopulmonary and/or circulatory system of the patient for UMMC & Capital Region hospitals and support services associated with Perioperative Services at UMMC.ResponsibilitiesClinical LeadershipOversee delivery of perfusion, ECMO, anesthesia, and surgical support services for inpatients and outpatientsApply expert knowledge of cardiopulmonary bypass equipment, anatomy, physiology, and mechanics in daily practiceRecognize and respond to critical patient situations, communicating effectively with surgeons and Perioperative LeadershipPeople ManagementRecruit, onboard, and develop a high-performing team of perfusionists and support staffSet performance standards, conduct evaluations, and manage promotions and corrective actionsFoster professional growth through continuing education, conferences, and in-service trainingOperations & QualityDevelop and implement departmental policies, procedures, and quality improvement initiativesMonitor department performance and ensure compliance with all regulatory requirementsIntroduce new techniques, equipment, and research findings to continuously elevate care standardsBudget & AdministrationBuild and manage the departmental operating budget; consult with administration on capital expendituresMaintain accurate records, statistics, and reports for administrative and regulatory purposesOversee billing, charging systems, and caseload managementSafety & FacilitiesEnsure all equipment and facilities meet standards for safety, efficiency, and infection controlEvaluate supply and equipment needs and justify purchases as neededWork ExperienceEducation and ExperienceBachelor’s degree & Certificate in Perfusion Technology or BS in Perfusion Technology required. Advanced degree preferred. Certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion required. Perfusion licensure as required by Maryland at time of employment required. Five (5) years progressively responsible professional experience as a Perfusionist required; Three (3) years of previous perfusion supervisory experience preferred.Knowledge, Skills And AbilitiesProficient knowledge of perfusion techniques and practices, ECMO, Anesthesia and OR support needs, purchasing and inventory control, budget management and personnel management. Proficient knowledge regarding perfusion, ECMO and cell saving, anesthesia and general OR equipment operation. Knowledge of personal computer, hardware and software for use in writing reports and compiling quality improvement statistics. Highly effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary to work with assigned staff, patients, as well as various hospital supervisory and clinical staff, and outside agencies. Demonstrated effectiveness in supervising/managing, monitoring daily work activities, evaluating, training and motivating performance of subordinate technical, professional, supervisory and clerical support staff. Ability to develop relationships with professional affiliations/organizations as appropriate is required. Ability to maintain knowledge and keeps up-to-date on changes in the related field.Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and ability to assess data reflective of the patient's requirements relative to his or her population-specific and age specific needs.
