The CST is responsible for preparing the operating room, maintaining a sterile environment, and ensuring that all surgical instruments and supplies are ready and functioning properly to support safe and efficient surgeries. Key Responsibilities Pre-Operative Duties Prepare operating rooms by setting up surgical instruments, equipment, and sterile supplies Ensure all equipment is sterilized and functioning properly Arrange sterile drapes, solutions, and instrument trays Verify patient identity, surgical site, and required supplies Assist with patient positioning and surgical site preparation Intra-Operative Duties Assist surgeons by passing instruments, sutures, and supplies during procedures Maintain sterile field and adhere to infection control protocols Anticipate the needs of the surgical team during procedures Monitor and account for surgical instruments, needles, and sponges Handle specimens for laboratory analysis Post-Operative Duties Assist with dressing application and patient transfer to recovery Clean and restock the operating room Dispose of biohazard materials and used instruments Prepare instruments for sterilization and next procedure Requirements & Qualifications Education & Certification Completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist program Current Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential required Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification required Experience 1–2 years of operating room or surgical experience preferred Experience in multi-specialty surgical settings is a plus Skills & Competencies Strong knowledge of surgical procedures, instruments, and aseptic techniques Excellent hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity Ability to work in fast-paced, high-pressure environments Strong attention to detail and patient safety focus Effective communication and teamwork skills Ability to anticipate surgical team needs Physical Requirements Ability to stand for long periods during surgeries Capability to lift and move patients or equipment Stamina to work extended or irregular hours, including on-call shifts Preferred Qualifications Experience with electronic medical records (EMR/EHR systems) Advanced certifications in specialized surgical areas Sterile processing or GI tech experience Multilingual skills (depending on patient population) Work Environment Hospitals (Operating Rooms) Ambulatory Surgery Centers Specialty Clinics Apply now to start your next travel adventure!
