Staff Scientist / Geologist in TrainingJob DescriptionThis Staff Scientist / Geologist in Training role focuses on year-round collection and interpretation of field data to support environmental assessments, site remediation, industrial permitting, and groundwater supply investigations. You will work in a dynamic, collaborative team environment with frequent crossover into geotechnical and construction engineering services. The position combines hands-on fieldwork with detailed desktop analysis and report preparation, offering strong opportunities for technical growth, mentorship, and long-term professional development.ResponsibilitiesCollect field data, including detailed soil descriptions, drilling logs, water level measurements, and field samples for geologic, environmental, and hydrogeologic assessments.Operate field instruments and equipment to gather hydrogeologic and environmental information in support of investigations and remediation projects.Oversee and coordinate field activities performed by contractors such as drillers, backhoe operators, laboratories, and geophysical survey providers to ensure safe and accurate execution of work.Conduct desktop reviews and research by analyzing scientific and engineering reports, geologic and soils maps, topographic maps, and aerial photography to support project planning and interpretation.Prepare clear and accurate written reports, drawings, maps, tables, and logs that summarize field and desktop data using computer applications such as CAD, Excel, Word, and related tools.Interpret hydrogeologic concepts, including groundwater flow and contaminant transport, and apply these interpretations to environmental and groundwater supply projects.Review and understand applicable environmental regulations as they relate to permitting, site investigations, and environmental assessments, and incorporate these requirements into project work.Communicate project goals, questions, roles, and scope effectively, and coordinate responses or follow-up actions through a supervisor as needed.Prioritize multiple projects and tasks to meet deadlines and budget constraints while maintaining high-quality work in both field and office settings.Maintain focus and attention to detail when working on several projects simultaneously, ensuring data accuracy and consistent documentation.Travel to project sites as required, including occasional overnight stays, to perform fieldwork and oversee contractor activities.Lift and carry equipment and materials up to 50 pounds and safely navigate field conditions such as brush, uneven terrain, and hills.Essential SkillsBachelor's degree in Geology with 0–3 years of professional experience.Valid driver’s license and access to a working vehicle for travel to project sites.Strong written and oral communication skills to document findings and interact with team members, contractors, and stakeholders.Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.Ability to use computer applications for technical documentation and figure preparation; experience with CAD is preferred.Fundamental knowledge of soil and geology classification and the ability to read and interpret maps.Field training and foundational understanding of hydrogeology and groundwater systems.Ability to comprehend project goals, roles, scope, and key questions, and to respond or coordinate responses through a supervisor.Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage time to meet project deadlines and budgets.Ability to maintain focus on assigned tasks while working on multiple projects in both office and field environments.Ability to work additional and nonstandard office hours when required to meet project needs.Willingness and ability to travel occasionally, including possible overnight stays.Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and walk through brush, up hills, and across uneven terrain during fieldwork.Additional Skills & QualificationsExperience with soil sampling, groundwater sampling, and environmental data collection.Exposure to or interest in environmental remediation and groundwater investigations.Experience in a Staff Scientist, Geologist in Training (GIT), or similar role.Familiarity with civil engineering environments, particularly projects related to land development, water resources, and transportation.Experience working with or supporting construction inspection, land surveying, or construction management services.Interest in professional development toward passing the Engineer in Training (EIT) exam and eventually obtaining Professional Engineer (PE) licensure, with mentoring and support available.Comfort working in a multidisciplinary team that includes geotechnical, environmental, and construction engineering professionals.Job Type & LocationThis is a Permanent position based out of New Britain, PA.Pay And BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $65000.00 - $85000.00/yr.00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000Workplace TypeThis is a hybrid position in New Britain,PA.Application DeadlineThis position is anticipated to close on May 30, 2026.About ActalentActalent is a global leader in engineering and sciences services and talent solutions.
