Staff Accountant
Position SummaryThe Staff Accountant is responsible for performing general accounting functions including journal entries, account reconciliations, financial statement preparation, and month-end closing procedures. This position supports the accounting department in maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with accounting principles, and providing financial analysis for transportation operations. The role requires strong analytical skills and knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).Essential Functions and ResponsibilitiesPrimary DutiesGeneral Ledger ManagementPrepare and post journal entries for various business transactionsMaintain chart of accounts and ensure proper account codingPerform monthly account reconciliations for balance sheet accountsResearch and resolve account discrepancies and variancesAssist with general ledger maintenance and cleanup activitiesMonth-End and Year-End ProceduresExecute month-end closing procedures according to established timelinePrepare accrual and deferral entries for accurate financial reportingAssist in preparation of monthly financial statementsSupport external audit procedures and provide requested documentationParticipate in year-end closing and audit preparation activitiesAccounts Payable and Receivable SupportReview and process vendor invoices and expense reportsAssist with accounts receivable analysis and aging reviewPerform three-way matching for purchase orders, receipts, and invoicesSupport collections efforts through account analysis and documentationMaintain vendor master file and payment termsFixed Assets and DepreciationMaintain fixed asset register and tracking recordsCalculate and record monthly depreciation entriesProcess fixed asset additions, disposals, and transfersCoordinate with operations for asset verification and inventoryEnsure compliance with capitalization policiesFinancial Analysis and ReportingPrepare various financial and operational reports for managementAnalyze revenue and expense trends by business unit or customerSupport budget preparation and variance analysisAssist with cash flow analysis and forecastingProvide ad hoc financial analysis as requestedSecondary DutiesSupport sales tax preparation and compliance activitiesMaintain supporting documentation for financial transactionsParticipate in process improvement and system implementation projectsCross-train in other accounting functions as neededRequired Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesEducation and ExperienceBachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field requiredMinimum 2-3 years of general accounting experienceTransportation industry experience preferredTechnical SkillsProficient in QuickBooks or similar accounting softwareAdvanced Microsoft Excel skills including pivot tables, VLOOKUP, and financial modelingExperience with ERP systems preferredKnowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)Understanding of internal controlsCore CompetenciesStrong analytical and problem-solving abilitiesExcellent attention to detail and accuracyEffective written and verbal communication skillsAbility to work independently and manage multiple prioritiesStrong organizational and time management skillsProfessional demeanor and ability to maintain confidentiality
