Lead Mainframe Developer
Location: Indianapolis, IN / Plano, TX / Boston, MA / Portsmouth, NH / Seattle, WA – onsite / Hybrid (as per client requirement)
Experience Required: 5–8 Years (Strictly Development – No Production Support Profiles)
Job Summary We are seeking a highly skilled Lead Mainframe Developer with strong hands-on experience in IBM Mainframe technologies including COBOL, JCL, IMS DB, DB2, MQ Series, and Xpeditor. The ideal candidate is a true developer (not production support), capable of designing, coding, testing, and delivering robust mainframe applications. This role requires strong analytical ability, excellent communication, and a proactive mindset.
Key Responsibilities
Application Development
Design, develop, code, test, and maintain mainframe applications.
Perform detailed unit, integration, and contract-level testing.
Peer-review code, technical design documents, and provide improvement feedback.
Assist QA teams with test execution, defect analysis, and validation.
Issue Resolution & Support
Participate in on-call rotation to resolve application failures.
Troubleshoot system performance issues and collaborate with infra/support teams.
Analyze and resolve issues related to business data processing.
Provide root-cause analysis and implement permanent fixes.
System Monitoring & Performance
Monitor application and batch job performance.
Collaborate with respective support teams to resolve software and hardware issues.
Ensure stability, reliability, and high availability of mainframe applications.
Collaboration & Leadership
Lead discussions in virtual and cross-functional environments.
Ask the right questions, provide recommendations, and drive improvements.
Mentor junior developers when needed and support team maturity.
Required Technical Skills
IBM Mainframe Technologies: COBOL, JCL, IMS DB, DB2
Tools & Utilities: MQ Series, Xpeditor
Strong mainframe debugging and performance-tuning skills
Hands-on experience writing & reviewing complex COBOL and JCL code
Strong testing experience: Unit, Integration, Contract-level testing
Working knowledge of Spring Boot (basic understanding is sufficient)
Working knowledge of Git for version control
