Business Development Representative

Join us in building the autopilot for legal servicesToday, legal work is done the way it has been done for a century: manually, by humans, in six-minute increments. Every contract drafted from scratch. Every memo researched line by line. Every matter running through layers of review that someone is paying for at hundreds of dollars an hour. That is about to change. We believe that in five years, more than 80% of legal work will pass through a model before it ever reaches a human. The implication is not faster lawyers. It is a fundamentally different way that legal services get bought and procured. Our mission is to make high-quality legal work accessible and affordable for everyone. We are going after the services spend, not the software spend, helping law firms restructure their delivery model around AI, and helping in-house teams do the same. One engine of agents and workflows underneath every matter we touch. We are a lean, in-person team based in New York City, backed by New Enterprise Associates (NEA), Pear VC, Stanford Law School, and executives at OpenAI and Ramp. Our customers span AmLaw firms and global in-house legal teams across four continents, and we are growing fast. Every role at August is a chance to remake an industry while the window is open. The RoleWe're looking for a Business Development Representative who treats outbound as a strategic discipline, not a script. You'll be on the front lines of how the legal industry meets AI, opening conversations with managing partners, CIOs, GCs, and innovation leads at the firms shaping where the market goes next. This is not a role where you wait for a playbook. The playbook is something you help write. You'll partner directly with our founders, AEs, marketing, and GTM engineering team to figure out what works, codify it, and scale it. The BDRs we hire now will set the standard for what the function looks like as the team grows. Our pipeline is full of forward-looking firms running active evaluations across litigation, transactional, and regulatory work. We treat the firms we work with as partners in building the law firm of the future, and your job is to start those partnerships. What You'll DoRun multi-channel outbound across email, phone, and LinkedIn. You'll own the sequences, the openers, the calls, and the experiments that decide what works. Our GTM engineering team partners with you to automate the patterns you prove out, so what you discover becomes infrastructure the whole team can use.Build the prospecting strategy alongside us. Decide which firms, practice groups, and personas are worth the week. Break into accounts that haven't heard of us and turn cold starts into real conversations. Bring your own ideas for sequences, events, and angles. The BDRs who succeed here are the ones who walk in with hypotheses, not requests for direction.Use AI as a force multiplier. Everyone at August, regardless of role, is expected to think like an engineer: spot the repetitive work, build a system to automate it, and share what you learn. You'll use Claude Cowork to research accounts, automate workflows, and build skills the rest of the team can install. Fluency with AI tools and a genuine instinct for where to apply them is core to the job.Run experiments and know your numbers. A/B test consistently, measure what works, and let the data tell you what to scale.Show up for events and conferences. ABA TECHSHOW, ILTACON, Legalweek, ReInvent Law, plus the dinners and roundtables we host throughout the year. You'll travel when it matters and you'll come back with meetings on the calendar.Partner with marketing and GTM engineering to convert warm signals across our inbound and engagement channels into real conversations. Bring back what you're hearing to sales, marketing, and product. The objections you encounter on the phones, the patterns you spot in pipeline, and the workflows prospects describe often become the next thing we build.About YouYou see business development as a craft, not a layover. The strategic side of the work, picking the right accounts, building the right cadence, finding the angle nobody else has tried, is what makes this interesting to you. You want to be great at this job and you treat it as substantive work in its own right. You've sold something hard, or come from an environment where output and accountability were measured every day. Maybe you were an early SDR or BDR at a startup that asked you to figure things out without a manager hovering over you. Maybe you came from legal recruiting, an expert network, or another high-output, relationship-driven role where you learned how to get senior people on the phone. Maybe you ran your own thing. What matters is that you know what it feels like to own a number and hit it.You move fast. You're comfortable with shifting priorities, ambiguous problems, and being asked to do something today that didn't exist yesterday. You ask great questions, default to action, and don't need a process to be written down before you start. You're fluent with AI tools and have opinions about how to apply them. You've used Claude, ChatGPT, or similar tools to make your own work better, and you're excited to go deeper at an AI-native company building on the frontier. You're a strong communicator and credible in a room with senior buyers. On the phone, in writing, in person. You can hold a conversation with a managing partner without flinching, take a complicated product story and make it land in fifteen seconds, and read when to push and when to listen. You're hungry. You take feedback well and you give it directly. You believe the people around you make you better, and you want to be part of building a generational company. You're based in New York City or willing to relocate. This is an in-person role and our team is in the office five days a week.Bonus PointsFounding or early SDR/BDR experience at a startup where you helped build the functionBackground in legal recruiting, or experience at an expert network (AlphaSights, Third Bridge, GLG, etc.)Familiarity with the legal industry, law firm structure, or selling into professional servicesTrack record of building sequences, automations, or workflows that materially moved metricsHands-on experience with HubSpot, Amplemarket, Salesfinity, LinkedIn Sales Navigator, Gong, or ClayA side project, a company you started, or something else that signals you build things on your ownGrowth at AugustThis role is a foundation, not a ceiling. August is growing quickly across sales, customer success, GTM engineering, and revenue operations, and the BDRs who join now are well positioned to grow into whatever comes next, whether that's an AE seat, a customer-facing role on the post-sale side, or a more technical seat building the systems that power our GTM motion. We hire people who want to be here for the long arc of the company, and we invest accordingly. Where you go from here is a conversation we want to have early and revisit often.BenefitsMedical insurance coverageFlexible PTOParental leaveCentralized office equipment ordering for all employeesEquinox or Chelsea Piers gym membershipIn-office perks: lunch, dinner, snacks, drinks, and moreBudget for travelTeam-building eventsRelocation support to NYC (as needed)Why Join AugustFounding Impact: Shape not just your role but the company.Uncapped Upside: Competitive base + commission, early equity ownership.Top-tier Team: Work alongside people who move fast, think clearly, and care deeply.Category-Defining Work: Help build the first true AI agents for the legal profession.Fast Growth: Scale your career as we scale the company.In-person in NYC: Collaborative, talent-dense, high-energy environment.Global Reach: Our clients span 4 continents and use August in multiple languages and jurisdictions.Frontier of Applied AI: August has access to proprietary data inaccessible to foundation model providers.
