Position Summary
The MEP Technical Services Specialist is responsible for providing technical oversight and ensuring successful delivery of all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems for data center projects. Acting on behalf of the owner, this role ensures that engineering, procurement, and construction activities are aligned with project objectives, design intent, and performance requirements.
This position serves as the critical bridge between design teams, contractors, vendors, and commissioning agents—driving technical accountability, resolving issues, and ensuring that all systems are delivered safely, on schedule, and fully functional for commissioning and operations.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Oversight
Represent the owner's interests in all MEP-related technical matters across design, procurement, construction, and commissioning. Ensure all MEP systems are delivered in accordance with contract requirements, project schedule, and performance criteria. Hold contractors, engineers, and vendors accountable for technical execution and system performance. Provide independent verification that installed systems align with approved design and operational intent.
Engineering Interface & Design Management
Act as the primary technical interface between design consultants and construction teams. Review and challenge engineering deliverables to ensure completeness, coordination, and constructability. Identify design gaps, inconsistencies, or risks and drive timely resolution with the appropriate stakeholders. Ensure design aligns with data center reliability requirements (e.g., N+1, 2N redundancy, maintainability).
MEP Systems Oversight
Oversee execution and integration of mission-critical systems, including:
Electrical: Utility interconnection, switchgear, transformers, UPS systems, PDUs, backup generation
Mechanical: Chilled water systems, cooling towers, CRAH/CRAC units, pumps, heat rejection systems
Fuel & Plumbing Systems: Fuel oil systems, water treatment, drainage, and support infrastructure
Ensure proper system interfaces and sequencing to support energization and commissioning.
Construction Support & Issue Resolution
Provide technical support to the field to resolve complex MEP issues impacting installation and schedule. Monitor contractor execution for compliance with design, specifications, and best practices. Participate in site walks, technical reviews, and coordination meetings to proactively address issues. Drive timely resolution of RFIs, field changes, and technical deviations.
Procurement & Vendor Oversight
Review and approve vendor submittals, shop drawings, and technical documentation on behalf of the owner. Ensure procured equipment meets project specifications, performance requirements, and delivery timelines. Support expediting efforts by resolving technical issues impacting fabrication or delivery. Participate in factory acceptance tests (FATs) and inspections as required.
Commissioning & Turnover
Support development and oversight of commissioning plans and procedures. Ensure systems are installed and tested in accordance with commissioning and startup requirements. Coordinate with third-party commissioning agents to validate system readiness and performance. Ensure all systems meet operational and reliability requirements prior to turnover.
Schedule & Risk Management
Align MEP system delivery with project schedule milestones and critical path requirements. Identify technical risks to schedule, cost, or performance and implement mitigation strategies. Provide clear, accurate reporting to project leadership on system status, risks, and recovery plans.
Qualifications
Experience
7+ years of experience supporting MEP systems on data center projects (required).
Experience in an Owner's Representative, EPC, or mission-critical construction environment.
Proven track record supporting delivery of complex, fast-track data center builds.
Experience with commissioning/startup of mission-critical systems strongly preferred.
Technical Expertise
Deep understanding of data center MEP infrastructure and system integration
Strong knowledge of redundancy strategies (N+1, 2N, concurrently maintainable systems)
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and electrical one-line diagrams
Familiarity with applicable codes and standards (NEC, NFPA, ASHRAE, etc.)
Skills
Strong technical problem-solving and decision-making capabilities
Ability to influence contractors and vendors without direct authority
Excellent communication skills across technical and non-technical stakeholders
Highly organized with ability to manage multiple priorities in fast-paced environments
Key Competencies
Owner-focused mindset with strong accountability for results
High technical acumen with practical field execution knowledge
Ability to bridge engineering design with construction realities
Proactive, solutions-oriented approach to problem-solving
Strong leadership presence in high-pressure project environments
