MIDDLE SCHOOL
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:
Hold a current and valid Illinois Professional Educator License
Administrative endorsement preferred
Minimum of three years of successful classroom teaching and/or related services experience, with middle school experience preferred
LBS 1 endorsement and/or related services PEL preferred
Strong knowledge of special education programming, service delivery models, and inclusive practices
Working knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, MTSS, and the Illinois School Code as related to special education
Demonstrate ability to collaborate with administrators, teachers, related service providers, support staff, students, families, and community members
Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to use technology and data systems as tools for organization, documentation, and decision-making
Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions
CPI Certification required or the ability to obtain
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Special Education TOSA supports the day-to-day implementation of special education and student services programming at the middle school level. The position serves as a collaborative liaison among administration, teachers, counselors, related service providers, support staff, and families to ensure consistent implementation of IEPs, accommodations, behavioral supports, and service delivery. The Special Education TOSA assists with coordination, compliance monitoring, problem-solving, and data-informed decision-making while working under the direction of building administration.
REPORTS TO: Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Instruction and/or designee
SUPERVISES: Classified support staff, as assigned
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Support the implementation and monitoring of IEPs and student accommodations to ensure fidelity and consistency across instructional settings
Serve as the LEA representative in IEP meetings as assigned by building administration, ensuring procedural compliance and supporting collaborative decision-making
Co-facilitate and support assessment planning and implementation, including classroom, district, state, and other standardized assessments, with a specific focus on accommodation planning and compliance
Facilitate and support building-level student services, MTSS, and problem-solving teams, promoting collaboration among special education, general education, counseling, and related service staff
Support functional behavior assessments (FBAs), behavior intervention plans (BIPs), and the implementation of positive behavior supports
Serve as a problem-solving partner to staff by helping navigate complex special education situations, identify creative and compliant solutions, and balance student needs, family concerns, and district obligations
Provide guidance and backing to staff when working with high-needs or high-conflict family situations, ensuring communication remains respectful, student-centered, and aligned with district expectations
Participate in IEP meetings and student services meetings as assigned, supporting documentation, follow-through, and implementation of team decisions
Provide consultation and support to teachers and support staff regarding instructional strategies, accommodations, and inclusive practices
Assist with supervision, coaching, and evaluation input for assigned classified staff, in alignment with district procedures
Respond promptly and appropriately to student crises and urgent situations, serving as an active member of the building crisis response team and supporting de-escalation, safety planning, and follow-up in collaboration with administration and student services staff
Maintain a working knowledge of current laws, regulations, and guidance related to IDEA, Section 504, ISBE requirements, and assessment protocols
Attend required meetings, trainings, and professional development
Perform other duties as assigned by administration
PHYSICAL & WORK ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS
Work is performed in a variety of instructional, behavioral, and support settings within the school environment, including classrooms, hallways, and specialized program areas
May require physical engagement related to student support, including frequent movement, standing, walking, and responding to physically active behaviors
May require participation in CPI-aligned physical management techniques, used only as a last resort to maintain safety and in accordance with district procedures, training, and legal requirements
Requires the ability to respond quickly to urgent situations or crisis calls throughout the school day
Requires flexibility in schedule and work location based on student needs and building priorities
