SummaryThis position is located at the Salisbury VAMC in the Department of Veterans Affairs - Veterans Health Administration - Facility Management - Salisbury - NC. The Incumbent is responsible for coordinating and completing maintenance on utility systems and building maintenance while working independently on evening and weekend tours.QualificationsTo qualify for this position - applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element - which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.DutiesMajor duties include - but are not limited to: -The incumbent will provide Engineering support and will respond to all Engineering related calls including mechanical - electrical - and other building and equipment maintenance needsMechanical Systems: -Incumbent will be responsible for operation - preventive maintenance - and repair on a variety of mechanical systems including HVAC systemssteam - plumbing - sewer - medical air - medical vacuum - and oxygen-HVAC systems will include water cooled and air chillers - piping - air handling units - fan coil units - pumps - valves - pneumatic and DDC controls - thermostats - and other system components-Incumbent will change HVAC filters throughout the station based on a preventive maintenance schedule-Plumbing repairs will include piping and all connected fixturesElectrical Systems: -Incumbent will be initial responder to electrical calls-Incumbent will be responsible for electrical maintenance including troubleshooting and repair of electrical components and controls on HVAC systems-Incumbent will make electrical repairs including reset of breakers to restore power - and minor repairs to lights - receptacles - and other electrical equipmentBuilding Maintenance: -Incumbent will be initial responder to wort requests involving building maintenance to walls - floors - ceilings - doors - etc - -Incumbent will make emergency repairs as necessary -All major repairs will be referred to the Building Maintenance ShopHVAC Work: -Incumbent must have knowledge and skills necessary to operateinstall - and maintain commercial HVAC systems and all associated components including water cooled chillers - air cooled chillers - air handling units - fan coil units - VAVs - pumps - valves - piping - humidifiers - dehumidifiers - controls - etcserving all areas of the medical center including patient care areas - Operating Room - ICU - Lab - computer roomand other critical areas-Incumbent must be able to troubleshoot and repair all components of HVAC systems Incumbent will use pneumatic and electronic DDC controls to operate various systems-Incumbent will operate and maintain chilled water and steam components for each systemIncumbent must have knowledge skills necessary to operate and maintain steam heating systems including piping - convectorssteam traps - heat exchangers - condensate pumps - etc-Incumbent must have knowledge and skills necessary to select proper filters for each application when changing HVAC filtersWork Schedule: Full time - Monday - Friday - 7:00 am - 3:30 pmOccasionally - the supervisor may require the employee to change their tour to provide coverage during extended vacancies in positions that ordinarily work second or third shiftPosition Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Mechanic/PD02134A Physical Requirements: The incumbent works from ladders - scaffolding and hydraulic platformsHe/she often works in portions of the utility systems requiring attention that are cramped - dirty and hard-to-reach locationsThe work may involve prolonged crouching and standing and frequent stooping - bending - kneeling - climbing - and working in exhausting and uncomfortable positionsThe incumbent frequently lifts or carries tools - equipment - ladders - scaffolding - parts and supplies up to 50 poundsOccasionally - the incumbent will be required to lift and carry items over 50 poundsWorking Conditions: Exposed frequently to temperature extremes - drafts - dampness - water - and noise for work conditionsThe majority of work takes place in an industrial environment but does require work outdoors - exposed to the elementsHe will frequently encounter ladders - catwalks - confined spaces - etcIncumbent could be subjected to hazards normally encountered in the tradeThis position may require working overtimeNote: Must be able to operate a mother vehicle.
