Engineering Manager, Cloud & DevSecOps

The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI)—home of the Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes—is seeking an Engineering Manager, Cloud & DevSecOps to lead a highimpact group driving our cloudfirst, Kubernetesbased infrastructure.As one of the NASA's science operations centers, STScI supports some of the most advanced scientific missions on the planet. You will guide the engineers who ensure our cloud platforms are scalable, secure, costefficient, and ready for missioncritical workloads that serve the global astronomy community.This role is hybrid with occasional onsite presence (1–2 times per quarter). Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to MD, VA, DC, PA, DE, or WV. Relocation assistance is available. U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency is required due to ITAR constraints.What You'll LeadAs the Engineering Manager you will oversee a team responsible for Cloud & Platform engineering.Core Responsibilities:Building and operating AWS cloud infrastructure using modern, cloudnative engineering practicesManaging secure, reliable Kubernetes platforms (EKS and related tooling) for product and mission teamsImplementing and maturing DevSecOps automation, CI/CD to enable platformsPartnering with Security to support Zero Trust, IAM best practices, CSPM, and compliance activitiesDefining SLOs, operational readiness, observability standards, and platform health metricsPrioritizing engineering backlogs, coordinating work across teams, and ensuring roadmap alignmentLeading a team of cloud DevSecOps engineers, providing mentorship, coaching, performance management, and career development opportunitiesCollaborating with stakeholders across Science, Engineering, IT, and Mission OperationsSupporting cost visibility, resource planning, and cloud efficiency strategiesWhat Makes This Role ImpactfulYou will shape the institute's cloud and platform strategy, influencing how we build, deploy, and operate the systems that power worldclass science. You'll help teams across the institute adopt secure, scalable, cloudnative patterns to accelerate scientific research and mission operations.What We're Looking ForRequired Qualifications:Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience7+ years in cloud, infrastructure, platform, or DevOps engineering3+ years leading engineers as a manager, team lead, or technical leadHandson AWS expertise, including networking, IAM, and multiaccount designStrong experience operating Kubernetes platforms (EKS, Rancher, OpenShift, or similar)Proficiency with IaC (Terraform preferred)Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automation, and security scanningKnowledge of observability tooling: metrics, logs, traces (OpenTelemetry, Datadog, etc.)Excellent communication and leadership skills, with a collaborative, supportfocused mindsetPreferred Qualifications:Experience operating in regulated or highassurance environments (NIST, FedRAMP, NASA, DoD)AWS Certifications (Architect, DevOps Engineer, SysOps, Cloud Practitioner)Knowledge of modern IAM standards (OIDC, SAML, Okta, Auth0, Cognito)Familiarity with policyascode or compliance automationOur excellent benefits include:Employer retirement contribution – direct STScI contribution of 10% of your salary from your first day12 days sick leave, up to 24 days' vacation, and 10 paid holidaysFlexible work schedule with healthy work/life balanceComprehensive medical/dental/vision/prescription plans, and more!The annual salary range for this role is $180 - $210K.
