Assistant Controller

Dart Transit is seeking a highly motivated and resourceful Assistant Controller to help lead and strengthen our accounting and finance operations. Reporting directly to the CFO, this role will oversee a team of accounting professionals while playing a critical role in financial reporting, month-end close, process improvement, and internal controls. The ideal candidate combines strong technical accounting expertise with a passion for building efficient, scalable processes. This individual will be instrumental in improving close timelines, enhancing reporting accuracy, implementing best practices, and leveraging technology, automation, and AI tools to create a more efficient accounting function. Key Responsibilities Accounting & Financial Reporting Lead the preparation of accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements. Ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP and company accounting policies. Review and approve journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules. Assist with the management of the annual audit process and external auditor relationships. Support tax compliance activities and coordination with external advisors. Maintain and strengthen internal controls and accounting procedures. Leadership & Team Development Lead, mentor, and develop a team of accounting professionals. Establish clear expectations, accountability, and performance standards. Foster a collaborative, solutions-oriented team culture. Provide coaching and professional development opportunities for team members. Process Improvement & Operational Excellence Drive continuous improvement initiatives across the accounting function. Evaluate and redesign accounting workflows to improve efficiency, accuracy, and scalability. Lead efforts to shorten and improve the month-end and year-end close process. Develop and document standardized accounting policies and procedures. Identify opportunities to reduce manual work through automation and technology. Technology & Automation Leverage AI, automation tools, and modern accounting technologies to improve productivity and reporting. Partner with finance, operations, and technology teams to improve data integrity and system effectiveness. Evaluate opportunities to streamline recurring accounting and reporting activities. Business Partnership Collaborate with operational leaders and business partners across the organization. Provide financial insights and support decision-making through accurate and timely information. Assist the CFO with special projects, financial analysis, and strategic initiatives. What We're Looking For Required Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance. 5+ years of progressive accounting experience. Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting requirements. Experience managing or significantly contributing to month-end close processes. Demonstrated success improving accounting processes and operational efficiency. Experience leading or mentoring accounting staff. Strong organizational and project management skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Preferred CPA designation preferred. Public accounting experience and/or corporate accounting leadership experience. Experience with ERP systems and financial reporting platforms. Exposure to automation, workflow optimization, and AI-enabled tools. Experience supporting external audits and internal control environments.
