Student Research Assistant

Looking for motivated Computer Science students looking for hands-on experinece creating an impactful tool. You’ll get mentorship with a seasoned Software Engineer and the opportunity to contribute to more transparency in the legal system. Preference for current GMU students but will consider Washington D.C.- area students as well.Job Title: Student Research Assistant - Software Engineer Location: Hybrid (meets Fridays weekly from 1:00pm - 5:00pm with Engineering Team: Virtual with some in-person meetups throughout the semester with full research team). Commitment: 10 hours per week, including 4 hours of focused team collaboration Position Overview:The Legal Systems Policy Lab with Dr. Tauheeda Yasin is seeking smart, hardworking, and dedicated Research Assistants to join our dynamic software development team for the Fines, Fees, and Penalties Project. This role is perfect for students who are eager to enhance their technical skills and gain hands-on experience in a professional environment. You will be working on cutting-edge technologies and contributing to impactful projects that support transparency in the legal system. https://www.tauheedayasinmartin.com/legal-systems-policy-lab Key Responsibilities:Collaborate with the development team to design, develop, and operationalize web applications.Write clean, efficient, and well-documented code using JavaScript, React, HTML, and CSS.Utilize GitHub for version control and collaborative development.Work with VS Code as the primary development environment.Develop server-side and front-end logic using Node.js.Learn and implement React, Chakra UI, and Firebase. Required QualificationsExperience with GitHub, VSCode, Javascript, HTML, CSS, and Node.js.Familiarity or willingness to learn React, Chakra UI, and Firebase.Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive attitude.Excellent communication and teamwork abilitiesWilling to commit at least 10 hours per the project. Credit may also be available. Nice to HaveExperience with Large Language Models (LLMs).Previous project experience or internships in software development.Ability to adopt to new technologies quickly.
