PRN Phlebotomist

Job Summary:The PRN Phlebotomist is responsible for performing venipuncture and capillary blood collection on patients of all ages in a rural, critical access hospital setting. This role supports laboratory operations by ensuring accurate specimen collection, labeling, and handling while delivering compassionate patient care. As a PRN (as-needed) team member, the phlebotomist provides flexible coverage for staffing gaps, weekends, holidays, and high-volume periods.The functions and duties for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:Essential Functions:• Perform venipuncture and capillary blood draws on pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients• Accurately label, process, and transport specimens according to laboratory protocols• Verify patient identity and ensure proper test orders before collection• Maintain strict adherence to infection control, safety, and HIPAA guidelines• Enter and verify patient and specimen information in the electronic health record (EHR) system• Assist with specimen processing, centrifugation, and storage as needed• Maintain inventory of phlebotomy supplies and restock as necessary• Provide excellent patient service, especially in a rural community where patient relationships are valued• Collaborate with nursing staff, providers, and laboratory personnel• Respond to urgent/stat lab draws, including emergency room and inpatient needsRequired Qualifications• High school diploma or equivalent• Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program (or equivalent experience)• Current phlebotomy certification preferred (e.g., ASCP, NHA, AMT)• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred or required within a specified timeframe• Valid driver's license may be required (if traveling between facilities)Core Competencies• Compassionate, patient-centered approach to care• Strong communication and conflict resolution skills• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment• Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities• Self-directed with the ability to work independently• Collaborative team player with a positive and professional attitude• Ability to maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations• Prior phlebotomy experience preferred, especially in hospital or rural healthcare settings• Experience with all age groups strongly preferred• Familiarity with EHR systems and laboratory information systems is a plusKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities• Strong venipuncture technique and specimen handling skills• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision• Excellent communication and patient interaction skills• Attention to detail and accuracy• Flexibility and adaptability in a variable work schedule• Ability to remain calm and efficient in urgent situationsPhysical Requirements & Work Environment• Prolonged standing and walking• Frequent use of hands for venipuncture and specimen handling• Ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds• Visual acuity and manual dexterity required• PRN/as-needed basis• Must be available for variable shifts, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidaysOrganizational Expectations• Represents the organization in a positive, respectful, and professional manner• Comply with all organizational policies, ethical standards, and regulatory requirements• Maintains strict patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations• Completes required education, training, and annual competencies• Wears identification badge and adheres to dress code• Attends all required meetings and in-servicesAdditional InformationShift : OtherContact InformationMatthew Pruitt - Department LeaderLaboratoryEmail: matthew.pruitt@cedarcomem.com
