Safety Engineer

Provide safety management and EHS support for the ALS-U Project, covering design, construction, installation, testing, commissioning, and project closeout.Perform hazard identification, risk assessments, JHA/AHD reviews, and hazard mitigation activities.Develop and verify engineering, administrative, and work-practice controls and conduct field safety inspections.Support work planning and control, including work packages, readiness verification, and safe-work execution.Provide construction and installation safety support, including fall protection, confined space, electrical safety, lifting/rigging, and contractor safety.Prepare safety assessments, hazard analyses, safety procedures, compliance documentation, field observation reports, and corrective action recommendations.Coordinate with Engineering, EH&S, Radiation Protection, Facilities, contractors, and project teams to ensure safety and regulatory compliance.2.1.1 Task 1 – Safety Program Support Provide technical support for implementation and continuous improvement of project safety programs.Activities may include:Safety program assessmentsSafety planning supportReview of project safety requirementsEvaluation of project safety practicesDevelopment of safety recommendationsParticipation in safety planning activities2.1.2 Task 2 – Hazard Identification, Assessment, and Mitigation Identify and evaluate hazards associated with project activities; develop, document, and implement appropriate hazard controls and mitigation measures; and verify that established controls are incorporated into work planning and field execution.Activities may include:Perform hazard assessments and risk evaluations.Develop and implement hazard mitigation strategies, including engineering, administrative, and work-practice controls, and verify their effectiveness during field execution.Develop and/or review Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Activity Hazard Documents (AHDs), and other work-planning documentation.Identify and evaluate industrial, construction, electrical, radiological, lead, hazardous-material, and other project-specific hazards.Advanced Light Source Upgrade Project.Develop engineering, administrative, and work-practice controls appropriate to identified hazards.Coordinate implementation of hazard controls with responsible project and institutional organizations.Perform field verification that required controls and mitigations are in place before and during execution of work.Identify deficiencies or changing field conditions and coordinate corrective actions before work proceeds, as appropriate.Document hazard assessments, mitigation measures, actions, and closure evidence in accordance with applicable project and LBNL requirements.2.1.3 Task 3 – Work Planning and Control Perform Work Planning and Control activities for assigned ALS-U work, including development and review of work packages, identification and incorporation of required controls, readiness verification, field coordination, and confirmation that work is executed in accordance with approved requirements.Activities may include: Review of work packagesEvaluation of proposed work controlsVerification of hazard mitigation measuresRecommendations for safe work executionCoordination with technical organizations2.1.4 Task 4 – Construction and Installation Safety Provide safety support for fabrication, construction, equipment installation, testing, and commissioning activities.Support may include:Field observationsSafety walkthroughsEvaluation of changing work conditionsReview of lifting and rigging activitiesElectrical safety coordinationFall protection evaluationsConfined space supportContractor safety coordination
