Staff Software Engineer, Linux Kernel and Baseboard Management Controller Architecture

Overview In this role you lead a multi-year modernization of Google’s BMC software architecture to scale across heterogeneous compute platforms. You own the Linux kernel stack, networking, and installation systems, driving device driver and core subsystem work across ARM-based and custom SoCs. You collaborate with hardware, accelerator, and infra teams to align requirements and ensure robust hardware/software integration, while shaping open standards and installation pipelines. You influence industry bodies and open framework specifications to accelerate adoption across platforms. ResponsibilitiesDefine and drive the multi-year BMC modernization agenda for scalable architecturesOwn Linux kernel, networking stack, and installation systems for BMCDevelop, debug, and optimize device drivers and core kernel subsystems across ARM-based/SoC generationsCollaborate with hardware engineering and accelerator teams to align requirements and integrationArchitect software pipelines for I2C, I3C, SPI, UART, USB, and CANbus interfacesRepresent Google in OCP and other industry bodies; lead OBMF-ICP standardization and adoptionContribute to upstream Linux kernel and industry standards effortsSupport secure installation pipelines and network booting strategies (PXE/DHCP) Key requirementsBachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience8 years of software development experience5 years in embedded operating systems5 years in testing and launching software products3 years in software design and architectureExperience with embedded systems, Linux drivers, C/C++Leadership and cross-functional collaborationStrategic thinking and architectural judgmentStrong communication and stakeholder managementEmbedded Linux platforms and driver developmentLinux kernel concepts including device trees and memory managementBoard bring-up and cross-generation SoC experience
