Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP is seeking an Environmental Associate Attorney (3–5 years) to join our nationally recognized Environmental Practice Group. This position may be based in San Francisco, Los Angeles (Downtown), or New York. Our teams are known for delivering practical, business-oriented counsel and for collaborating seamlessly across offices to support clients locally, nationally, and internationally.The Environmental team seeks candidates who have experience supporting a broad range of regulatory, litigation, and administrative matters, including:ResponsibilitiesProviding regulatory analysis and practical advice across multiple media (air, water, and soil)Broad knowledge of major environmental laws (CERCLA, CAA, CWA, RCRA, TSCA), including how these laws work, which local, state, and federal agencies administer and enforce key programs, and how to efficiently research and resolve complex issuesAdvising clients across federal, state, and local regulatory agencies (California state and local experience is particularly valuable)Litigation and administrative experience in courts, administrative proceedings, and ADR, including analyzing facts and law, drafting briefs, letters, and related submissions, and handling in-person meetings and proceedings with clients, regulatory agencies, courts, and tribunalsExperience or demonstrated interest in climate and carbon matters, including California programs (Cap-and-Invest, LCFS), carbon credit transactions (compliance markets and the voluntary carbon market/VCM), and climate-related litigationTransactional environmental due diligence experience is a plusQualificationsJuris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school3–5 years of relevant environmental law experience (regulatory counseling and/or disputes)Strong legal research, analytical, and writing skills, with excellent attention to detailStrong communication and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple concurrent mattersTeam-oriented mindset and eagerness to learn directly from leading practitionersResume, cover letter, and law school transcript are required to apply.
