With an education in our network of schools, our scholars will do more than succeed — they will thrive!If you are interested in learning more about See Forever, please visit our website at www.seeforever.orgSite Description The Youth Services Center (YSC) is the District of Columbia's detention center for male and female youth, responsible for the care and custody of young people placed in secure detention by court order from the DC Superior Court Family Court Division.Position OverviewThe English Teacher must be willing to teach a range of English subject areas, including English I, English II, English III, English IV, and/or Reading and Language Arts. With the support of a special education teacher, this position will also support students with special learning or emotional needs to ensure that they receive the level of instruction that they need to enable them to succeed.ResponsibilitiesSpecific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:Designing and implementing curriculum including unit plans and assessments that are aligned both with Common Core standards and with the school-wide curricular framework at Maya Angelou Academy at YSCDeveloping and implementing age-appropriate, culturally responsive teaching practicesWorking with technology and computer-based programs to support scholars' individual learning plansSuccessfully using a backward design model in creating a curriculum with clear objectives and goals directly related to end-of-year benchmarksDeveloping differentiated learning plans, materials, and handouts for diverse learners in a small classroom settingAssessing individual learning styles and adapting teaching methods to fitCreating a classroom and school environment that features a rich diversity of resources engages student interest, promotes student leadership, and stimulates student learningManaging administrative assignments effectively and with a high level of professionalism and integrityParticipating in interdisciplinary team meetings for all studentsOther duties as assignedQualificationsBachelor's degree in education or subject field (required)Must have or be eligible for certification by OSSE in the appropriate content area (must obtain within 1 year of employment)Experience working with opportunity or justice involved youth (preferred)Familiarity with research-based instructional strategiesTouchstoneAt the Maya Angelou Schools, the key to our success is rooted in building trusting, respectful and nurturing relationships with each other. Compensation for instructional roles follows our established pay bands, which can be accessed from our career page.
