Backend Java Developer

## About the RoleZebra Technologies is seeking a Backend Java Developer to design, develop, and maintain software for complex products and systems. The role focuses on Java-based backend development, microservices, CI/CD, cloud infrastructure, and software architecture. You will contribute to high-impact projects, provide technical leadership, collaborate across engineering disciplines, and develop solutions that address complex technical and customer needs.## Key Responsibilities* Establish requirements for highly complex software design projects and help define project scope and objectives.* Architect and design software for complex systems in alignment with organizational goals and technical standards.* Participate in all phases of software development, including in-process and final inspections.* Conduct and oversee code reviews and implement technical and quality improvements.* Develop innovative software programs, technologies, and solutions.* Document development methodologies and technical approaches for broader team use.* Provide technical leadership across multiple engineering disciplines.* Design and develop advanced tools to address complex technical challenges and improve engineering efficiency.* Collaborate across engineering disciplines to support innovation and project success.* Exercise technical judgment to deliver effective solutions within established policies and practices.* Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including senior management and customers, to coordinate technical efforts.* Serve as a technical expert and principal customer contact on critical projects.## Required Qualifications* 8+ years of relevant work experience with a Bachelor’s degree, or 5+ years of relevant experience with an Advanced degree.* Equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.* Bachelor’s or Advanced degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent relevant work experience.* Experience programming in Java.* Experience developing microservices using Spring Boot.* Expertise with CI/CD pipelines.* Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, Jenkins, and Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE).* Expertise with PostgreSQL.* Experience with software development methodologies including source code management (SCM) and build automation.* Advanced proficiency in multiple programming languages and software architecture.* Strong understanding of software design patterns, system-level programming, and performance optimization techniques.* Familiarity with adopting Generative AI within the software development lifecycle.* Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities for highly complex technical challenges.* Ability to provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers.* Strong written and verbal communication skills.## Preferred Qualifications* Familiarity with competitor products and industry trends.* Experience developing innovative technologies and solutions for evolving business and customer needs.* Strong understanding of intellectual property protection and competitive analysis.* Experience influencing stakeholders and collaborating across organizational boundaries.## Skills & Competencies* Java* Spring Boot* Microservices* CI/CD* Docker* Kubernetes* Jenkins* Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE)* PostgreSQL* Source Code Management (SCM)* Build automation* Software architecture* Software design patterns* System-level programming* Performance optimization* Generative AI in software development* Technical leadership* Mentoring* Analytical and problem-solving skills* Cross-functional collaboration* Stakeholder communication## Education & Experience* **Experience:** 8+ years of relevant experience with a Bachelor’s degree, or 5+ years with an Advanced degree.* **Education:** Bachelor’s or Advanced degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.* Equivalent relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.## Work Arrangement & Schedule* **Location:** Lincolnshire, IL* **Work Arrangement:** Hybrid* **Onsite Requirement:** Minimum 3 days per week at Zebra’s corporate office in Lincolnshire, IL.* **Employment Type:** Not specified.## Compensation & Benefits* **Base Salary:** $122,800–$184,200 per year.* **Annual Cash Incentive:** Target of 12% of base pay, subject to the applicable incentive plan.* Benefits may include healthcare, wellness programs, inclusion networks, learning and development, community service days, parental leave, employee assistance programs, and paid time off, depending on applicable location and eligibility.* Hybrid work, adaptable hours, Summer Flex Fridays, Focus Fridays, and an annual companywide well-being day are offered as part of the workplace flexibility and wellbeing programs.* Some roles may also be eligible for long-term incentive equity awards.## Equal Employment & AccommodationsZebra Technologies is an equal opportunity employer.
