Director of Basketball Operations/Head Coach

Woodberry Forest School is seeking a Director of Basketball Operations / Head Coach for the 2026-27 school year. As a member of the Virginia Prep League, Woodberry has a rich academic and athletic tradition. Our commitment to helping boys develop into service leaders dates to the school's 1889 inception. We are looking for a director who will continue our pursuit of excellence in character, academics, and basketball. We view the combination of athletics, academics, the arts, outdoor programming, and residential life as equal and vital partners in the "whole boy" experience at Woodberry. With this in mind, the Head Varsity Coach and Director of Basketball Operations plays an important role in the character development of each player while creating a highly competitive, positive, and inclusive culture for the collective basketball program. The Director of Basketball Operations will demonstrate in his/her own actions and coaching the values that align with Woodberry Forest School's mission.Specific coaching duties and responsibilities:Build relationships with participants of the entire basketball program and offer emotional, physical, and social support to all players and coaches.Teach values and character to the boys in learning opportunities. Encourage a sense of belonging for all participants and assist in inter-player relationships. Define roles and responsibilities for assistant and lower team coaches.Develop a plan with coaches to integrate fundamental teaching and growth for boys at all levels: Bengal (freshmen), JV, and Varsity.Work closely with the gym staff in coordinating equipment needs for each season.Maintain and organize all basketball equipment with the support of Woodberry staff.Understand the academic responsibilities of the boys and take a vested interest in their academic progress.Deeply understand the physical and mental demands on young athletes and organize and plan practices accordingly.Value strength & conditioning, nutrition, mental health, and the notion of playing multiple sports to help athletes realize their full potential.Work collaboratively with Woodberry athletic training staff in support of student safety, injury prevention and recovery from injuries.Work alongside the athletic director to budget each season for operational needs and for long term planning and purchases.Work closely with the athletic department with respect to travel and scheduling.Build relationships with member schools in the Virginia Prep League (VPL).Understand Virginia Independent School Athletic Association (VISAA) and VPL policies and rules and support the implementation of those policies and rules.Work in partnership with the admissions office to communicate to prospective students and families the values and ideals of the entire Woodberry community.
