Position Overview:
The Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Department Manager leads and oversees CMT and Field Services operations for our Fort Worth office, ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and in alignment with engineering best practices. This role provides hands-on and strategic leadership across project execution, staff supervision, and departmental performance, including oversight of project delivery, quality control, budgeting, forecasting, and financial results. Responsibilities:
Manage the full lifecycle of field services engineering projects and laboratory operations
Lead a team of CMT engineers, project managers, and technicians
Ensure projects adhere to CMT engineering best practices, safety standards, and quality control procedures
Perform technical review of proposals, reports, and calculations
Track department budget, revenue, forecasts, and financial performance
Set goals for the CMT/Field Services group and develop staff skills through training initiatives
Assist senior staff with business development efforts through community involvement and client engagement
Attend project meetings and troubleshoot problems in the field
Review daily field reports from a technical oversight
Approve weekly timesheets and department expense reports
Prepare invoices
Follow all safety procedures, policies and protocols
Vehicle maintenance, inspection, and adherence to safety policies and procedures
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
High School diploma or equivalent
Must be at least 18 years old for entry onto job sites
Valid Driver's License with acceptable driving record
Experience of 6+ years in engineering, including conducting laboratory testing, construction observation, field quality assurance testing, site grading, and supervising construction materials testing, project management
Preferred: BS in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology or related degree
Preferred: Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) or ability to obtain licensure within 3 months of hire
Excellent communication, leadership, and project management skills
Strong technical knowledge of testing procedures and specifications
Experience with budgets, forecasts, and financial management
Knowledge of construction materials methods, ASTM standards and soil classifications
Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
Ability to evaluate “Request for Proposals,” attend site meetings or converse with potential clients to develop a scope of services and associated cost estimate
Strong leadership skills; strong and proven work ethic
Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
Ability to analyze and correct operational issues
Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations, to customers, clients, construction teams, and other employees of the organization
Ability to effectively prioritize and execute multiple tasks in a high-pressure environment
Ability to work weekends, holidays, overtime, overnight and travel as needed
Travel Requirements:
This position requires extensive travel, approximately up to 70% of the time, in support of business
objectives and client engagements. Travel may be both scheduled and on short notice, depending on
project needs. Destinations typically include job sites, field locations, or regional offices, where work may
be conducted in outdoor or operational environments. Adherence to all company safety protocols and
use of PPE is required during travel and on-site work. Physical Demands & Work Environment:
This position primarily works in an outdoor work environment, regularly exposed to varying field conditions, including:
Sites that may not be accessible by vehicle, requiring travel on foot through wetlands, swamps, grasslands, fields, and other uneven or rugged terrain with natural and man-made obstacles such as sand, brush, and debris.
Moderate to loud noise levels, common in active construction and industrial environments.
Exposure to environmental elements including dirt, dust, sun, heat, humidity, and adverse weather conditions.
The physical requirements for this position may include and are not limited to:
Ability to lift and/or carry 35 to 75 lbs. up to 75 feet, involving regular repetitive motion.
Ability to stand, walk, drive, and operate equipment for extended periods.
Frequent use of hands and arms for typing, handling tools, and operating equipment.
Ability to bend, twist, reach, stoop, pull, kneel, climb, balance, lift, carry, and push as required for fieldwork and inspections.
Ability to speak and hear effectively to communicate in noisy environments and with project teams.
Ability to use your senses to see (including close, distant, and peripheral vison, depth vision, and ability to focus) smell, hear, touch (use hands to reach climb or balance, crouch, stoop, crawl, kneel and sit).
