Job Summary:
Under minimal supervision, admits all patients and assists patient's family members. Responsibilities include reception, switchboard, scheduling and medical record handling.
Areas of Responsibility:
1. Receives patients and family members obtains accurate, complete demographic and insurance information and financial contract / consent on patient charts.
2. Ensures patient and their family members’ needs are met regarding their comfort and concerns.
3. Participates with surgery scheduler in chart preparation, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality are maintained.
Obtains appropriate patient/guardian signatures on required forms, verifying accuracy of patient information. Labels forms using established policy and procedure.
5. Accurately, and in a timely manner, distributes forms to appropriate areas at time of registration.
Participates with surgery scheduler in the accurate, proper and appropriate scheduling of cases.
7. Receives cash payments from patients and follows corresponding procedure for cash collection.
8. Acts as a liaison between clinical units and lobby waiting room.
Participates in accurate and timely handling of medical records.
10. Responsible participation in verification of completeness, and filing of all patient medical records.
11. Participates in Center Quality Improvement Program activities including identification of opportunities for cost reduction and efficiencies.
12. Attends all center meetings and educational opportunities.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Minimum of two years related registration/ receptionist/ surgical scheduler experience, preferably in a health care setting.
2. Demonstrated interpersonal communication skills to facilitate effective interaction with a variety of health care professionals and the public.
3. Ability to work independently and to organize and prioritize work efficiently to achieve Center goals.
4. Keyboard skills of 50 wpm minimum.
5. Ability to operate computer, various software packages (preferably MS Office, Windows 95 and, Lotus), copy machine, fax machine and other office machines.
6. Verbal ability required to prepare reports, to take notes/ minutes at meetings, and to compose letters using proper spelling and punctuation.
Working Conditions:
1. Requires intermittent sitting, standing, walking. Lifting and pushing of light to medium objects.
2. Works in clean well-lighted and ventilated environment with no apparent direct exposure to physical hazards.
Based on the OSHA guidelines for protection against occupational exposure to hepatitis and HIV, this position is described as Category II. This means that this position has some exposure to blood and body fluids. Policies are in place for Universal Precautions identifying risks and appropriate barrier protection.
