Environmental Health and Safety Specialist
Job Summary
The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist plays a crucial role in ensuring workplace safety and compliance with environmental regulations. This position is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining EHS programs that promote a safe working environment while adhering to local, state, and federal regulations. The EHS Specialist will collaborate with various departments to identify hazards, conduct training, and ensure compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines.
Duties
Develop and implement EHS policies and procedures to ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, and other regulatory requirements.
Conduct regular inspections and audits of facilities to identify potential hazards and recommend corrective actions.
Provide training sessions for employees on safety practices, emergency procedures, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Prepare detailed reports on safety incidents, including root cause analysis and recommendations for prevention.
Maintain records related to workers' compensation claims, safety training sessions, and EHS compliance documentation.
Collaborate with management to develop strategies for reducing workplace injuries and promoting occupational health.
Stay updated on changes in environmental laws and regulations that may affect the organization.
1. Safety Program Development and Implementation
Design, implement, and monitor safety programs, procedures, and policies to minimize workplace hazards.
2. Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment
Conduct regular safety inspections of the manufacturing facility to identify potential hazards (e.g., equipment malfunctions, unsafe work practices).
Perform risk assessments and develop strategies to mitigate identified risks.
Use tools like Job Safety Analysis (JSA) or Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) to evaluate and address workplace risks.
3. Compliance and Regulatory Adherence
Ensure compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations and local safety laws.
Stay up-to-date with federal, state, and local safety regulations, making sure the company is compliant with all requirements.
Assist in the preparation for OSHA audits or safety inspections and handle any related paperwork.
4. Training and Education
Train employees on workplace safety practices, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safe machine operation, and emergency procedures.
Conduct regular safety training sessions, workshops, and drills (e.g., fire drills, first aid, and CPR).
Educate employees about ergonomics, chemical safety, and electrical safety.
5. Incident Investigation and Reporting
Investigate workplace accidents and near-misses to determine root causes.
Compile reports on safety incidents, identifying trends, and recommending corrective actions.
Track and document safety-related incidents, ensuring they are reported to the appropriate regulatory bodies as required.
6. Safety Audits and Inspections
Conduct regular safety audits and inspections of equipment, machinery, and workspaces.
Ensure that safety equipment is in good working order and maintained properly (e.g., fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and emergency exits).
Monitor the effectiveness of safety programs through audits and employee feedback.
7. Ergonomics and Workplace Design
Evaluate workstations and production areas for ergonomic risks and suggest improvements to reduce strain or injury (e.g., lifting techniques, workstation adjustments).
Collaborate with management and engineers to design workspaces and workflows that minimize ergonomic risks.
8. Safety Equipment and PPE Management
Ensure proper selection, maintenance, and distribution of personal protective equipment (PPE) to employees (e.g., gloves, helmets, safety glasses).
Train employees on the correct use, maintenance, and limitations of PPE.
9. Emergency Response Planning
Develop and oversee emergency response drills (fire, chemical spill, etc.) and ensure all employees are familiar with emergency procedures.
Maintain emergency supplies (e.g., first-aid kits, eyewash stations, fire extinguishers) and ensure that they are easily accessible.
10. Reporting and Documentation
Maintain detailed records of safety inspections, incidents, training, and compliance documentation.
Prepare reports on safety performance and present them to management for decision-making purposes.
Maintain OSHA 300 logs (record of workplace injuries and illnesses) and ensure accurate reporting.
11. Continuous Improvement and Safety Culture
Promote a safety culture within the organization, encouraging employees to report hazards, unsafe conditions, or near-misses.
Continuously evaluate and improve safety programs based on incident trends, feedback, and best practices.
Organize safety committees and act as a liaison between employees and management to discuss safety concerns.
Develop emergency response plans for accidents, fires, or other incidents.
Create and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for safe work practices.
Skills
Strong knowledge of EHS regulations.
Proficiency in report writing to document incidents, inspections, and compliance activities.
Familiarity with OSHA standards and guidelines.
Experience in training development for safety programs.
Understanding of occupational health principles and practices.
Knowledge of EPA regulations related to environmental safety.
Ability to conduct thorough root cause analysis for incidents or non-compliance issues.
Certification in CPR is a plus.

Pay: $43,000.00 - $54,000.00 per year
