Laboratory System Technical Specialist

Job Description: This position has critical technical and operational responsibilities involving the performance management of a defined technical specialty, enterprise-wide for Intermountain Laboratory Services. This position coordinates process implementation, standardization, and internal process control measures across the assigned specialty. This position reports to the Laboratory QA & IPC Director. Job Specifics: Benefits Eligible: Yes Shift Details: Days Department/Unit: Transfusion Medicine Additional Details: Possible remote opportunity Scope: This position works closely with hospital laboratory facilities, Medical and Laboratory Operations Directors, Managers, Supervisors, Technical Leads, Lab Services Administrative Team and applicable Technical Work Groups to define validation requirements, ensure appropriate instrumentation selection and implementation, identify best practices, assure compliance with regulatory requirements and standard processes. This individual will maintain appropriate technical knowledge to advise and troubleshoot within their defined area of specialty and maintain training and competency in their area of expertise. Job Essentials: Helps to identify, communicate, and drive best practice and quality processes Identifies and develops effective relationships with facility ‘key-contacts’ within lab specialty, Medical Director, Laboratory Operations Directors and laboratory management. Makes site-visits with each Intermountain Hospital Laboratory regularly and as needed. Facilitates the Technical Work Group meetings. Researches, evaluates, and provides technical expertise to assist in identifying new instrumentation, reagents and validation materials, QC protocols and calibration specifications. Participates with Supply Chain to develop appropriate vendor relationships and contracting. Assists in the notification of product or vendor issues. Develops, communicates, and distributes validation packets for new instrumentation and method changes and assists in validation completion, as needed. In partnership with the work group QA lead, leads and directs change control for new testing or methodologies. May review QC on a defined basis, identifying issues and developing corrective action plans. Acts as a technical specialty resource, helps to troubleshoot instrumentation, QC and reagent issues. Identifies appropriate proficiency testing as applicable. Develops, performs, and submits site audits to Medical Director and IPC Director annually. Under direction of system laboratory operations directors, ensures compliance with all regulatory and accrediting agency standards. Identifies opportunities for efficiencies, standardization, appropriate testing menu, and test consolidation. Assists in new facility laboratory start-ups and ensuring that technical specialty is meeting all timelines. Participates in SOP development and review. Helps to develop, identify and monitor appropriate KPIs and metrics for the specialty. Supports the goals and initiatives of the System. Works with the education team to develop and support training programs for their specialty. Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or GED equivalency Five years clinical lab experience in technical specialty. Experience in instrument selection, validation and maintenance within technical specialty. Experience in a role requiring team-building skills. Experience using word processing, spreadsheet, database, internet and e-mail. Experience in a role requiring effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills. Current and valid driver’s license Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Medical Technologist or Medical Lab Scientist with ASCP, AMT, or NCA certification. Specialty certification, AABB or ASCP Previous supervisory experience. Physical Requirements: Physical Requirements: Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies. Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations. Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc. Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items. Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.) May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time. For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.
