Job OverviewThe Teacher AVID will plan and implement an instructional, AVID College Readiness System and provide related educational services for students in assigned grade levels. Manage student behavior, assess and evaluate student achievement, and modify instructional activities as required; carry out a variety of student monitoring and controls activities. Any teacher who will coach a UIL sport will also provide athletic services related to that athletic sport and the athletic program.Position DescriptionEssential Duties and ResponsibilitiesCommitment to, demonstrate support and advocate for the goals and mission of the AVID College Readiness System (ACRS)Assess student abilities as related to desired educational goals, objectives, and outcomes. Continually assess student achievement and maintain appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation for institutional and individual reporting purposesEnsure that the WICOR strategies are fully implemented during the AVID class, and assist other content teachers to implement WICOR strategies in their classes. Work with the AVID counselor to ensure that the AVID students are placed in rigorous courses appropriate to their interests, desire, and determination.Advocate for the AVID students with other teachers and the counselors as they seek access to rigorous coursesManage the behavior of learners in instructional setting to ensure environment is conducive to the learning process, and assists and participates in management of student behavior in other parts of the school, center, school grounds, or work siteCoordinate instructional related and testing activities with other professional staff, both school and non-school-based, as required, to maximize learning opportunitiesUtilize a variety of instructional materials and available multi-media and computer technology to enhance learningEnsure that Site Team meetings are held and that a written agenda is provided- Sites should hold monthly meetingsParticipate in in-service and staff development activities and staff meetings as required or assigned to include AVID professional development activitiesEnsure continuous communication with parents, both written and oral, to keep them informed of student(s) progressContinually communicate with students on instructional expectations and keeps them informed of their progress in meeting those expectationsManage allotted learning time to maximize student achievementMay assign work to and supervise instructional assistants, parent, and student volunteersEnsure classroom and/or instructional environment is attractive, healthful, safe, and conducive to learning and that materials are accessible to students and in good conditionMay, as itinerant, serve at two or more schools on a regular basis. May make off-school site visits to monitor students, confer with employers, or site instructors.Support or participate in school wide student activities and social events and approved fund raising activitiesAs assigned or required, monitor student behavior in non-instructional areas and intervenes to control and modify disruptive behavior, reporting to appropriate administrator as appropriateFrom time-to-time, collaborate with other professionals (guidance counselors, librarians) to carry out school wide instructional or related activities.Assist in developing self-advocacy, self-expression, and character development within the studentsAssist students (high school level) with college preparation activities such as college and scholarship searches, college essay, registering for college entrance exams, financial aid, etc.Design and hold (with the Site Team) regular parent meetings which focus on AVID strategies and preparing the students for college preparation and readinessWork closely with the AVID tutors and ensure that high quality AVID tutorials are provided during the AVID elective class two times per weekWork on continues training and retention of tutors for the campusSponsor and support student leadership, activism, and community serviceSchedule field trips and guest speakers (with the Site Team) for the AVID class including trips to college and university campusesLead the development of the school site team plan and certification with input and involvement from the building site teamComplete required on-line data entry as designated by the AVID CenterLead the site team in completing the annual Site Certification ProcessIf the position is tied to coaching a UIL sport, the following essential duties and responsibilities are applicable to coaching:Perform coaching duties as assigned as well as other duties required for the smooth, efficient operation of a successful athletic programPossess knowledge and adhere to UIL rules and regulationsAssist the Athletic Department with budget, schedules, care/use of facilitiesCommunicate with the Athletic Department on a regular basisSupervisory ResponsibilitiesNoneQualification RequirementsTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the above essential duties satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essentials functions.Bachelor's degree in education including course work in the subject/program to which assigned and in curriculum and instructional methodologyMaster's degree preferredValid Teaching Certification Issued by Texas Education Agency appropriate to subject and grade level of assignmentValid Driver's license with CDL Certification preferred if coaching a UIL sportCoaching experience preferred if coaching a UIL sportGood knowledge of FBISD program of studies related to assignments and public school mission, goals, and organizationGood knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment of instructional specialty(ies) to which assignedGood knowledge of adolescent growth and development or, if applicable, adult learning theoryAbility to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programsAbility to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assignedAbility to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, and parentsSkill in oral and written communication; excellent human relations skillsCompletion of the AVID Implementation Strand at an AVID summer institute is preferredPhysical Requirements/Working ConditionsThe work environment characteristics and physical demands described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
