Do Great Things! Durham Technical Community College is hiring an Instructor in the English and Communications Department. An instructor of English is responsible for course preparation, delivery, grading, and records management. The instructor will work closely with his or her discipline chair and other discipline or cross-discipline faculty on matters related to and for the benefit of the CALA department and its students. More specifically, and consistent with the terms and conditions of appointment as stipulated in the contract of employment.Teach all courses, as assigned, for the full duration of scheduled instruction, including seated, online, hybrid, or blended as needed at any of Durham Tech's instructional sitesBe fully prepared with a syllabus and instructional plans for each class session in accord with the stated objectives of the courseEnforce academic policy and procedures at all times, and comply with institutional rules and regulations to classroom instruction and general employmentMaintain posted office and on-campus hours sufficient to fulfill all contracted duties and individual professional obligations, as well as to meet the needs of the department, division, and collegeServe as educational advisor to students and participating in semester advising and registration activities for both assigned advisees and as needed by individual studentsParticipate in discipline, departmental, divisional, and institutional meetings, committees, and other special appointmentsAssist in the revision and development of course outlines, syllabi, curriculum plans, and other instructional documentation and in the identification, development, preview, and acquisition of educational resources and supplies required to meet program objectives and improve instructionMaintain complete course and student records, reports, and formsAttend training and other professional development opportunities on- or off-campus and stay current with developments in the field of instructionComplete all mandatory trainingsFulfill committee assignments and other special appointments within the educational community as well as the community-at-large, and otherwise giving appropriate support to institutional endeavors when appropriate;Assume other necessary responsibilities and perform additional tasks as assigned by the chair, department dean, chief instructional officer, or president, in meeting the needs of the department, division, and collegeAssume responsibility for laboratory/classroom preparation, including cleanup, and recommend, as necessary, appropriate laboratory supplies and equipmentmaster's degree in English or Rhetoric and Composition or a master's degree with at least 18 graduate semester hours in English.Preferred Qualifications:18 graduate semester hours in Communications and / or college-level teaching experience in communications courses.Work Experience:Two years of successful curriculum English instruction at a university or community college.Thorough understanding of and commitment to the mission and philosophy of the North Carolina Community College SystemDemonstrated ability to use modern instructional technology (Microsoft Office, learning management systems, e-mail, Internet, student information databases, library research databases) and experience with Internet-based instructionCompetence in oral and written communication skills necessary for effective teachingAbility to be organized, accurate, and punctual with paperwork and assigned tasksSensitivity to the needs and expectations of students, colleagues, and community groupsAbility to establish and maintain effective, civil, and respectful communication and interpersonal relations throughout the college and the communityPersonal integrity, honesty, and the ability to maintain confidentialityPhysical Demands:Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.
