Job DescriptionThe Engineering Support Intern position provides hands-on laboratory support for product development, technical sales support, and raw materials qualifications for a wax production facility. The plant produces wax blends that are primarily used as additives to improve the processing of PVC compounds. Our process is a combination of melt blending paraffin and polyethylene waxes and reacting stearic acid with lime or a polyol to make calcium stearate or ester waxes. The job will be in our development lab and will primarily involve making wax blends, blending PVC compounds, and testing the PVC compounds on a torque rheometer. The torque rheometer melts the PVC compounds, measures the change in viscosity, as well as the melt temperature as the PVC compound is converted from a powder to a homogeneous melt. There may be an opportunity to help run a lab extruder and injection molder.Timeline: The Internship is planned to begin in June of 2026 and go through August of 2026.Responsibilities RESPONSIBILITIES Making laboratory scale wax blendsMelting and mixing raw wax materialsRun lab scale chemical reactions where stearic acid is reacted with lime or a polyol to make calcium stearate or ester waxesMaking PVC compoundsBlend PVC compound ingredients including wax samples in a 1-litre or 10-L mixerTesting PVC compounds with a torque rheometerInstrument works the powder PVC compound measuring the viscosity and temperature as the polymer melts and fuses into a homogeneous massHelp test PVC compounds on a lab extruder or small injection molderAnalytical testing of wax propertiesAcid Value determination (titration of dissolved wax samples with a base)Drop Point (a type of wax melting point measurement)DSC and TGA thermal analysisPowder Flow Tester (possible project to measure the tendency of waxes to clump)Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS Currently enrolled college student pursuing a degree in Engineering, Chemistry, Polymer Science, Materials Science, or related field (Chemical Engineering or Chemistry majors preferred)Some college chemistry laboratory experience preferredAbility to work independently under minimal supervision and collaboratively as part of a teamCompensationThe hourly range for this position is $23.00 Per Hour.
