JOB TITLE: Senior Substation Engineer / Engineer Level 4 - Lead
LOCATION: Remote
SCHEDULE: Standard Office Hours
DURATION: 1-Year Contract
PAY: $63-68/hr
Job Responsibilities
Lead substation projects from early development through construction and commissioning for utility‑scale energy infrastructure.
Manage full lifecycle phases: concept development, engineering design, construction support and commissioning execution.
Support large‑scale renewable projects, including solar, battery energy storage systems (BESS), wind and hydrogen systems.
Work with Early‑Stage Project Managers to define engineering scope and requirements.
Provide technical oversight of external Engineers of Record (EOR).
Ensure project compliance with utility interconnection and engineering standards.
Essential Duties and Job Functions
Manage assigned substation projects from conception through execution.
Support engineering requirements and scope development during conceptual phases.
Provide technical oversight, due diligence and training to external engineering consultants.
Ensure compliance with interconnection agreements, project scope documents, site‑specific design requirements, IEEE standards, NEC requirements, and ASCE standards.
Develop scopes of work for approved engineering suppliers and secure bids.
Coordinate site development, engineering updates and permitting requirements.
Support sourcing and contracting of geotechnical, survey, engineering and construction services.
Support cost estimating teams with scope assumptions and technical input.
Present project progress, risks and mitigation plans to management.
Transmission / Interconnection Support
Review system impact studies, facility studies, reactive studies, harmonic studies and interconnection agreements.
Ensure transmission owner requirements align with engineering design.
Communicate regularly with transmission owners, operators and ISOs to ensure compliance and timely deliverables.
Procurement & Material Management
Manage long‑lead major material orders to minimize schedule and budget risk.
Support supply chain with scope of work creation, engineering service approvals and material purchasing requests.
Cross‑Functional Project Support
Collaborate across engineering disciplines to establish project priorities and execution plans.
Support commissioning activities to meet project objectives.
Support legal teams with regulatory filings, hearings and technical documentation.
Collaborate with OEMs to improve component integration into project design philosophies.
Knowledge & Skills
Strong substation engineering and system integration expertise.
Deep understanding of utility‑scale project execution.
Strong risk management capability.
Excellent project leadership and coordination skills.
Strong oral and written communication.
Ability to manage multiple stakeholders across technical disciplines.
Strong problem‑solving and decision‑making ability.
Focus on safe, efficient, and cost‑effective project execution.
Education & Experience
Bachelor of Science in Engineering required.
Professional Engineer (PE) strongly preferred.
15+ years of experience planning, designing and executing large‑scale energy projects.
Strong renewable energy experience required.
Advanced system integration experience preferred.
