Millwork Engineer / CNC Programmer

Job Overview We are seeking a skilled Millwork Engineer / CNC Programmer to join our growing custom cabinetry and architectural millwork company in the Tampa Bay area. This position is in office, not remote. In this hands-on technical role, you will translate client concepts, architectural drawings, and design ideas into precise, manufacturable solutions. You will lead the design, drafting, engineering, and programming processes to ensure high-quality, efficient production of custom cabinets, casework, entertainment centers, vanities, media walls, and other millwork products. This position is ideal for a detail-oriented professional who enjoys blending creative design with technical engineering and CNC automation to drive shop efficiency and deliver exceptional results for residential and commercial projects. You will work closely with the owner, project managers, fabricators, and installers in a collaborative, fast-paced environment. Responsibilities Design & Concept Development: Collaborate with clients, designers, and the team to develop custom cabinetry and millwork solutions. Create initial concepts, 3D models, and photorealistic renders that meet aesthetic, functional, and budget requirements. Drafting & Shop Drawings: Produce accurate 2D and 3D technical drawings, shop drawings, and detailed plans using CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SketchUp, or similar). Ensure drawings include dimensions, material specifications, joinery, hardware, and finishes. Engineering & Technical Analysis: Engineer components for structural integrity, material optimization, hardware integration, and compliance with relevant building codes, safety standards (including OSHA), and manufacturing best practices. Perform takeoffs, solve complex fit and tolerance issues, and recommend efficient construction methods. CNC Programming & Manufacturing Support: Develop and optimize CNC programs for routers, and other machinery. Generate toolpaths, nesting patterns, machine code, and production files to minimize waste and maximize throughput. Troubleshoot programming issues and support shop floor operations as needed. Project Coordination: Review architectural and client drawings, manage revisions, prepare material lists and cut lists, and ensure seamless handoff from design to fabrication and installation. Participate in project meetings and site visits when required. Process Improvement: Identify opportunities to streamline workflows, implement parametric design or automation scripts, and contribute to continuous improvement in design-to-production efficiency. Quality Assurance: Perform design reviews, verify accuracy of drawings and programs, and ensure final products meet or exceed quality standards and client expectations. Qualifications Experience: 3–5+ years of hands-on experience in custom cabinetry, architectural millwork, or high-end casework design and production. Preferred Qualifications Experience working in a custom or architectural millwork shop environment. Proficiency in 3D rendering software (e.g., for client presentations and photorealistic visualizations). Basic programming/scripting skills (e.g., parametric design, automation macros, or Python/LISP for CAD customization). Valid driver’s license and ability to occasionally visit job sites. Personal Attributes Strong attention to detail and accuracy. Excellent communication and collaboration skills — able to work directly with the owner, fabricators, and clients. Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple projects in a growing small business environment. Commitment to quality craftsmanship and continuous process improvement. Technical Skills: Proficient in CAD software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, or equivalent for 2D drafting and 3D modeling. Strong experience with CNC programming and CAM software (e.g., generating toolpaths, nesting, and machine code for routers, panel saws, and edgebanders). Familiarity with industry-specific software like Microvellum, Cabinet Vision, Mozaik, or similar is highly preferred. Design & Engineering Knowledge: Solid understanding of cabinet construction methods, joinery techniques, material properties (wood, laminates, hardware), structural engineering principles, and tolerances for millwork fabrication. Drafting & Documentation: Proven ability to create detailed shop drawings, cut lists, material takeoffs, and production documents from architectural plans or client concepts. Problem-Solving: Strong analytical skills with the ability to troubleshoot design, fit, or machining issues and optimize for efficiency, cost, and quality. Education: Associate’s degree or higher in Drafting, Engineering, Wood Technology, Manufacturing, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience will be considered. Job Type: Full-time Work Location: In person
