Position Summary
The Underground Construction Union Operator is responsible for operating heavy equipment to support the installation, maintenance, and repair of underground utility systems. This position requires strict adherence to union agreements, safety standards, and project specifications while working in a team-oriented environment.
Key Responsibilities
Operate heavy equipment such as excavators, directional drills, backhoes, loaders, and trenchers
Perform excavation, trenching, and backfilling for underground utility installation
Read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, and utility locates
Work safely around existing underground and overhead utilities
Assist with the installation of conduit, cable, pipe, and related infrastructure
Conduct daily equipment inspections and perform basic maintenance
Follow all OSHA, company, and union safety guidelines and procedures
Communicate effectively with crew members, supervisors, and project managers
Maintain productivity while ensuring quality workmanship
Support job site setup, traffic control, and restoration activities
Qualifications
Active membership in a recognized union (e.g., Operating Engineers, Laborers, or applicable trade union)
Proven experience operating heavy equipment in underground utility construction
Ability to read and understand construction drawings and utility markings
Knowledge of underground construction methods (fiber, gas, electric, water, sewer)
Strong understanding of safety practices and regulations
CDL A
Ability to work in varying weather and job site conditions
Strong teamwork and communication skills
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift 50+ pounds regularly
Work in trenches, confined spaces, and uneven terrain
Extended periods of sitting, standing, and operating machinery
Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
Work Environment
Outdoor construction sites with exposure to noise, dust, and heavy equipment
Travel may be required depending on project location
Overtime and weekend work as needed
