Gardener - Seasonal

Gardening Support Position Work outdoors and provides gardening support for Maplewood's gardens and planting including rain gardens, boulevard and facility plantings and natural resources restoration areas. Schedule: 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday, 6:30am-2:30pm Desired Start Date mid May with flexibility. Position lasts up to 6 months. Essential Duties And Responsibilities Maintains city gardens including rain gardens, boulevard gardens, and gardens at parks and city facilities. Prepares sites for planting; plant and mulch trees, shrubs, and perennials. Prunes shrubs and trees. Controls weeds and invasive species using various methods including hand pulling, mowing, brush cutting, herbiciding. Helps maintain trails and natural areas. May be asked to prepare planting designs. Installs signs, markers, and temporary fencing. Assists in evaluation of rain gardens. Leads volunteers on projects such as planting or weeding. Provides work direction and guidance to assistant gardener. Working Conditions Considerable knowledge of plant identification including trees, shrubs, perennials, native plants, and weeds. Considerable ability to perform heavy manual labor requiring continual use of large motor skills; standing, walking or kneeling for long periods; frequent bending, stooping, shoveling, twisting, turning, crouching, stretching, reaching, pushing and pulling to perform the work. Considerable ability to regularly lift and carry objects weighing 25-35 pounds. Considerable ability and stamina to work outdoors all day. Considerable ability to maintain a good driving record and drive safely and legally. Considerable ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Working ability to mix and apply herbicide. Minimum & Preferred Qualifications Experience with native plants, rain gardens, and landscape design. Two years professional experience as a gardener
