Testing and Prototyping Engineer
Overview
In this early-career, individual contributor role, you support material, component, and door-system testing while engaging in hands-on prototyping. You work with test technicians, engineers, and R&D scientists to execute test plans, analyze results, and communicate findings that inform front-end innovation and NPD programs. You contribute to prototypes, tests, and methods development in a safety-conscious lab environment. You will gain exposure to industry standards and drive continuous improvement across test and prototyping processes.

ResponsibilitiesSupport execution of material, component, and door/door system testing with techniciansAssist test setup, sample prep, instrumentation, and data collection across mechanical, environmental, durability, and performance evaluationsAnalyze data and prepare reports/presentations for engineers and scientistsDocument test methods, observations, deviations, and outcomes per internal standardsParticipate in prototype design and fabrication, including concept development and manufacturability considerationsSupport development of prototype manufacturing methods and build/modify prototypes with techniciansContribute to front-end innovation and new product development programsLearn industry standards, regulations, and internal test methods relevant to doors and door systemsContribute to continuous improvement of test methods, fixtures, and prototyping processesMaintain safety, organization, and laboratory best practicesWork onsite at Innovation Center in West Chicago, IL; travel up to 10%
Key requirementsBachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related technical disciplineHands-on lab, test, or prototype shop experienceStrong written and verbal communication skillsWillingness to learn across materials, processes, and testing methodologies0–2 years of relevant experience (internships, co-ops, or academic lab/project)Exposure to materials/mechanical/product testing or laboratory work preferredExperience with data analysis, technical reporting, or laboratory documentation preferredHands-on fabrication, prototyping, or manufacturing experience preferredStrong communicationAttention to detailCross-functional collaborationData analysisTechnical reportingLaboratory documentation
