Overview
Mesa seeks a motivated Project Engineer to manage a P&C and Physical Design team working on projects for a client with a growing workload. The position requires approximately 50% project work and 50% management. Responsibilities include monitoring budget and schedule, assigning resources to a project, communication and collaboration with the client's project managers and project engineers, managing a subcontractor, collaborating and mentoring with the design team, and working with other design teams.
Required Abilities
Strong knowledge of medium to extra high voltage substation protection & control systems and/or physical design layout requirements.
Strong verbal and written communications skills; ability to coordinate with and interface with clients, vendors, engineers, colleagues, and other electric utilities personnel.
Strong interpersonal skills to build relationships and work effectively with clients, peers, and affiliates.
Strong skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, scheduling software and workplace knowledge of corporate accounting practices and business operations.
Willingness to develop, promote and comply with company safety requirements.
Ability to understand and implement new processes/procedures regarding Project and Program management.
Knowledgeable of Project Management Institute’s (PMI) standards for Organizational Project Management (OPM).
Experience with electrical utility equipment, systems, and project/programs is required.
Belief that effective integration is key to project success.
Education / Experience / Licensure
Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited college/university.
8 years of relevant project experience.
Substantial multi‑year experience leading substation design projects.
Responsibilities
Initiate projects: complete project initiation documents, including detailed work scope/outline, budget, and schedule.
Assist the Project Team in defining/clarifying project scope and level of detail required to satisfy customer expectations and project requirements.
Maintain project status reporting system (database) current with actions and changes to support organizational responsiveness.
Lead assigned project team and subcontractor, ensuring project goals/objectives are achieved and business processes and applicable procedures are followed.
Plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate detailed phases of engineering/design work for projects.
Perform reviews of completed project work to check for errors.
Serve as Engineer of Record for project drawings that require a Professional Engineer stamp.
Assist the Project Manager in controlling project expenditures and schedule performance to satisfy requirements and budget performance.
Maximize project profitability through appropriate budgeting/pricing, resource utilization, and cost controls to maximize profit margin on individual projects.
Communicate effectively with project team, subcontractors, and clients to coordinate design or construction activities and flow of technical information, track/resolving action items and information requests.
Coordinate and communicate with peers to identify, document and resolve changes that may impact schedule and budget performance.
Ensure projects are closed‑out and archived in a timely manner according to applicable procedures.
Analyze project performance metrics trends and recommend corrective actions.
Develop understanding of numerous utility stakeholder departments.
Support development and implementation of client’s project engineering/management tools, standards, and processes.
Conduct large meetings/calls with project stakeholders, drive consensus, resolve challenges, assign, follow‑up, and complete action items.
Anticipate project risks before they occur, plan and execute risk management and mitigation.
