Data Analyst

OverviewThe Data Analyst is responsible for building, maintaining, and improving firmwide reporting, analytics, and business intelligence capabilities. This role focuses on transforming manual and fragmented reporting processes into accurate, scalable, and automated reporting solutions that support Finance, Operations, and firm leadership.The Data Analyst will work across departments to gather requirements, build structured datasets, and deliver dashboards and analysis that provide clear visibility into firm performance. The legal environment is fast-paced and deadline driven, so strong organization, accuracy, and the ability to manage multiple priorities is essential.Ideal candidates are highly proficient in SQL, comfortable working with large and complex datasets, and able to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. This role requires strong attention to detail, a systems mindset, and the ability to identify and implement process improvements.Job Responsibilities and Essential DutiesBuild and maintain SQL-based datasets and reporting structures to support firmwide financial and operational reportingReplace manual Excel and ad hoc reporting processes with scalable, automated reporting solutionsDevelop and maintain Power BI dashboards for leadership, Finance, and operational teamsWork with Finance, IT, and other departments to gather requirements and translate business needs into reporting solutionsAnalyze and report on key firm performance metrics including revenue, billings, collections, WIP, AR, utilization, and profitabilityReconcile reporting outputs to source systems and financial data to ensure accuracy and consistencyIdentify discrepancies in reporting and investigate root causes to improve data qualityBuild validation checks and controls into recurring reporting processesDocument reporting logic, metric definitions, and data transformationsCreate and maintain reusable data assets to improve efficiency and reduce duplication across reporting effortsCommunicate findings clearly and concisely to stakeholders, including senior leadershipWork proactively to identify opportunities for process improvement and increased efficiencyBuild relationships across departments to ensure alignment and successful reporting outcomesAssist with special projects and additional duties as assignedRequirementsStrong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy, with an understanding of how reporting impacts firm performance and decision-makingAbility to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environmentAdvanced SQL skills, including joins, aggregations, working with large datasets, and best practicesAdvanced Excel skills, including advanced formulas, pivot tables, macrosExperience building and maintaining reporting datasets and dashboards using Power BIStrong problem-solving and critical thinking skillsAbility to identify inefficiencies and implement process improvementsStrong written and verbal communication skillsAbility to work independently and as part of a teamComfortable working with sensitive and confidential informationAbility to learn new systems and processes quicklyEducation and ExperienceBachelor’s Degree required; degrees in Data Analytics, Information Systems, Business, Finance, or related fields preferred3–6+ years of experience in data analysis, reporting, or business intelligenceStrong experience with SQL requiredProficiency with Power BI or similar BI tools requiredAdvanced Excel experience requiredExperience working with financial or operational data preferredExperience in a law firm, professional services, or similar environment preferredExperience with systems such as Aderant, Elite, Litify, or similar is a plusExposure to Python, forecasting, or scenario modeling is a plusGrowth & DevelopmentThis role is primarily focused on SQL-based reporting, reporting automation, data accuracy, stakeholder support, and process improvement, with responsibility for translating business reporting needs into reliable dashboards, reusable datasets, and actionable insights.As reporting processes become more efficient and scalable, we would like the individual in this role to have opportunities to gain exposure to broader analytical work, based on business needs, team priorities, individual performance, and demonstrated capability.This may include exposure to financial analysis, revenue performance insights, process improvement initiatives, and cross-functional collaboration.Over time, the role may also provide exposure to:Support and contribute to the development of predictive analytics, statistical modeling, forecasting models, and scenario analysis to improve visibility into revenue, collections, and firm performanceUse Python or similar tools approved by leadership, where appropriate, for data analysis, automation, or modeling tasksAt FMG, people are our greatest asset.
