We solve problems, connect teams, and make sure DEA runs like a well-oiled machine, because great work starts with great support.The Support Services Business Unit is seeking a Controller in Portland, OR.A day in the life of a Controller at DEA sits at the intersection of strategy, stewardship, and execution. This role is responsible for ensuring the financial health of the firm; from leading the month-end close and overseeing multi-entity reporting, to guiding budget decisions and maintaining compliance with complex regulatory requirements like FAR and AASHTO. Throughout the day, the Controller partners closely with business leaders to interpret financial data, identify risks, and support informed decision-making, while also leading and developing a high-performing accounting team. Whether managing audits, strengthening internal controls, or navigating the nuances of a project-based environment, the Controller plays a critical role in keeping the firm running smoothly and positioned for long-term success.Key Responsibilities:Directs the Accounting Group in providing and directing procedures and systems necessary to maintain proper records; afford adequate accounting and project controls; and facilitate accurate and timely preparation of financial statements in accordance with GAAPGuides financial decisions by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing policies and proceduresProtects assets by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing internal controlsResponsible for all audits, including financial, overhead, DCAA, AASHTO, retirement plan audits and audit firm relationshipsMonitors and confirms financial condition by conducting audits; providing information to external auditorsPrepares budgets by establishing schedules; collecting, analyzing, and consolidating financial data; recommending plansAchieves budget objectives by scheduling expenditures; analyzing variances; and initiating corrective actionsProvides status of financial condition by collecting, interpreting, and reporting financial dataPrepares special reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trendsComplies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating future legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; filing financial reports; advising management on needed actionsEnsures operation of equipment by establishing preventive maintenance requirements and service contracts; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniquesCompletes operational requirements by scheduling and assigning employees; following up on work resultsMaintains financial staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employeesMaintains financial staff job results by coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; planning, monitoring, and appraising job resultsMaintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societiesProtect operations by keeping financial information and plans confidentialContribute to team effort by accomplishing related results as neededRequired Qualifications:Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance12+ years of relevant experience including at least 5+ years of experience as a Controller or Accounting ManagerAt least 5 years of experience leading a high performing team in the past 7 yearsExperienced working knowledge of FAR, GAAP, and IFRS, as well as AASHTO and state DOT audit requirementsCertified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) (Strongly preferred)Preferred Qualifications:Experience in the Architecture, Engineering, or Construction industryExperience with companies that have annual revenue of $200 million plusWhat We Offer:We foster an environment where talented professionals have the freedom and support to do their most meaningful work.
