At Pattern Bioscience, we're tackling antibiotic resistance, one of the biggest public health challenges of our time. We use machine learning and microfluidics to quickly recognize the bacteria causing an infection and to predict which drugs will cure the infection.
We are seeking an experienced and entrepreneurial Controller comfortable in the startup, biotech environment to lead our accounting operations and continue scaling the financial infrastructure needed to support our growth. You will be responsible for leading and streamlining our core accounting operations and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of our financial records. Initially, this role will focus on hands-on accounting functions, especially the monthly close and key compliance activities, at ~20 hours per week. As the company grows, there will be opportunities to expand the scope of responsibility (e.g., systems build-out, cost accounting) and potentially convert to full-time with team leadership. This role is for you if you enjoy building processes, have a strong understanding of the application of finance and accounting principles in a startup, medical device environment, and are passionate about helping startups grow.
How You Will Contribute
Immediate Priorities (fractional scope, ~20 hrs/week):
Oversee the company's accounting operations, including general ledger management, payroll, contractor-supported AP/AR, and tax filings
Complete the monthly close process, performing the hands-on accounting to ensure timely and accurate financial statements and internal reports
Implement and maintain internal controls and financial systems to ensure accuracy and compliance with US GAAP and other regulations
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations and reporting requirements
Proactively research and resolve accounting discrepancies or anomalies to ensure accurate financials
Manage relationships with external auditors and enable a smooth audit process
Drive the design of future-state accounting processes and systems (e.g., cost accounting, ERP improvements, commercialization readiness)
Other Opportunities (as fractional scope permits):
Support management with financial reporting and insights, with the opportunity to expand into forecasting and operational analysis over time
Assist in budgeting and forecasting as capacity allows
Support invoicing, project accounting, and audits for government contracts as needed
Contribute to the development of dashboards, consolidated reporting, and other financial tools as the business scales
We'd Love to Hear from You If You
Design, streamline, and communicate processes effectively
Excel in tactical execution with strong attention to detail while maintaining a strategic, big picture vision
Operate with integrity
Identify ways to remove operational friction and inefficiency, digging into problems and finding creative and compliant solutions
Are flexible, adaptable, and comfortable moving through uncertainty to recommend and make decisions
Thrive in low-infrastructure, fast-changing environments where you switch regularly between areas of responsibility, priorities and levels of work (e.g., individual contributor tasks vs. directing others)
Utilize strong data visualization and analytical skills to deliver insights
Communicate in written and oral formats in such a way that educates and clarifies
Lead teams effectively, either in-house or outsourced to deliver timely and quality outcomes
Foster strong cross-department relationships and pursue collaborative buy-in around areas of conflict.
Enjoy learning, practice curiosity and actively seek to grow
Desired Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field, CPA preferred, with 8-10+ years of progressive experience including leadership and management responsibilities and experience with startups
Experience with cost accounting in a complex manufacturing environment
Thorough knowledge of US GAAP
Proficiency in general ledger functions and the month-end/year-end close process
Experience with ERP systems (NetSuite preferred); ERP implementation experience a plus
