DEFINITION:
Under general supervision, operates a school bus over designated routes in transporting students; performs related work as assigned.
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Should possess the personal characteristics generally recognized as essential for good public employees including integrity, initiative, emotional maturity, dependability, courtesy, good judgment, and ability to work cooperatively with others.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
· Drives a gasoline or diesel-powered school bus daily, over designated routes in accordance with time schedules, picking up and discharging school children;
· Escorts children across streets, stopping traffic as necessary;
· Transports students and teachers on field trips;
· Inspects bus prior to operation for safety purposes;
· Keeps bus clean and reports any mechanical defects;
· Maintains good order among the students on the bus and while the bus is parked at bus stops, following district policies regarding student control and contact with parents and citizens;
· Takes pupil count as required;
· Perform emergency evacuation drills as required;
· Fills out report on the general condition of the bus;
· Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
· Safe driving practices;
· Provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code and the Education Code applicable to the operation of vehicles in transportation of school children.
Ability to:
· Drive a school bus and other automotive equipment safely and efficiently;
· Maintain order among children on a school bus;
· Understand and follow oral and written directions;
· Obtain a valid California Driver's license;
· Successfully complete the examination for school bus drivers given by the California Highway Patrol;
· Obtain a standard First Aid certificate;
· Obtain required yearly Inservice hours
· Maintain cooperative, effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
EXPERIENCE:
Having the experience in the operation of a bus or heavy motor vehicle desired.
EDUCATION:
Any combination of experience and education which will be equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
LICENSING:
Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver’s license and a certification of knowing standard first aid.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Environment: Warehouse environment; subject to driving a vehicle to conduct work.
Physical Abilities: Seeing to operate a school bus; carrying, pushing or pulling items up to 45 lbs.; and moving objects weighting up to 45 lbs., dexterity of hands and fingers to operate warehouse equipment and to sort mail, reaching overhead above the shoulders and horizontally to shelve and retrieve warehouse inventory, bending at the waist, and standing, sitting and walking for extended periods of time.
Hazards: Driving a vehicle during adverse weather conditions

Pay: $19.27 - $27.36 per hour
