Through a teaching approach that is fundamentally hands-on and child-centered, Bank Street students develop the courage and confidence to think independently, work collaboratively, understand themselves and others more deeply, and possess the compassion to make meaning of the world around them.About the PositionThe Bank Street School for Children is seeking an innovative Math/Science Teacher for the Upper School who will primarily teach 5th grade students. This role combines subject-area instruction with homeroom responsibilities, where serving as a co-advisor builds community and attends to the social-emotional development of students. Grade-level homeroom advisors engage in social-emotional support, executive function coaching, close collaboration with a homeroom co-advisor, and regular communication with families. We seek an educator with a Master's degree and at least three years of experience teaching upper elementary or middle school students. Experience with student-centered math and science curricula and working collaboratively in a progressive school that values social justice and equity work is preferred. The ideal candidate will be excited about working with 10 and 11-year-olds in a hands-on, inquiry-based learning environment.Overview of Curriculum:* Our 5th grade math program focuses on a study of arithmetic, rational numbers, decimals, statistics, problem solving, and geometry.* Our science curriculum focuses on force, motion, and simple machines, exploring variables as a function of experimental design, science expo (students work in groups to design experiments), and we end the year with a geology study.Key ResponsibilitiesMath and Science InstructionTeach math and science curriculum responsive to students' developmental capacities and needsDocument lesson plans and develop comprehensive curriculum with guidance from supervisor and in collaboration with the math/science teamDifferentiate instruction to support group and individual learningUtilize materials-based discovery approaches and inquiry-based pedagogyIncorporate technology into the classroom when applicable to enhance learningApply both standards-based assessment and progressive teaching methodsHomeroom and Student SupportServe as co-advisor and homeroom teacher, organizing and maintaining a positive classroom communityProvide extra help to students as necessary during activity periods and morning mathWrite student reports and present at curriculum eventsCommunicate regularly with individual families and others who support students' learning and growthCollaboration and Professional EngagementCollaborate with classroom teachers and specialists to support curriculum and children's developmentMaintain and share the math/science rooms in collaboration with the math/science teamAttend and engage in regular planning meetings and supervision meetingsAttend and participate in weekly faculty meetingsEngage in professional development and lifelong learningSchool Community ResponsibilitiesContribute to internal coverage within the math/science team and across the schoolFulfill weekly community duties as assigned, which can include lunch, recess, early morning care, and bus dutySupport and attend weekly assembliesSupport school events including dances, graduation, the school musical, promotional videos, field day, and field tripsComplete additional duties as assigned by supervisor and division headQualificationsRequiredBachelor's degree in Mathematics, Science, Education, or a related field3+ years of teaching math and/or science at the upper elementary or middle school levelExperience working as part of a collaborative team of teachersBackground in materials-based discovery approaches to mathematics and/or scienceUnderstanding of inquiry-based pedagogy and experience developing curriculumKnowledge and understanding of child development and constructivist teachingAbility to effectively differentiate instructionExperience with anti-bias and culturally responsive pedagogyStrong organizational and communication skills, both written and verbalAbility to communicate effectively with colleagues, parents, and administrationProficiency with incorporating technology into the classroomDemonstrated classroom management skillsPreferredMaster's degree in Mathematics, Science, Education, or a related fieldFamiliarity with Bank Street's progressive, child-centered approach to educationExperience with Bridges Math and/or Connected Mathematics curriculum
