Medical Laboratory Technician Location: Athol, MA Agency: Conflux Systems Inc Pay: $48 to $50 per hour Shift Information: Nights - 4 days x 10 hours Contract Duration: 12 Weeks Start Date: ASAP About the Position Top Priority Skills & Experience Meditech experience Roche Analyzers experience Basic Blood Bank experience: ABO Rh Antibody Screen DAT Crossmatch Experience working independently in a small hospital setting Venipuncture skills Job Summary The MLS/MLT performs a wide range of laboratory procedures across all clinical laboratory departments while exercising independent judgment and assisting in the evaluation of current procedures. The role works closely with supervisors and coworkers to complete patient testing, quality control, correlation studies, and special projects. The ideal candidate actively participates in specimen collection procedures and demonstrates strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Essential Functions Patient Care & Professional Conduct Maintains friendly, courteous, and respectful interactions with patients, visitors, and staff Ensures patient privacy and confidentiality Maintains a clean and safe hospital environment Responds appropriately during emergency situations Complies with hospital attendance and safety policies Completes mandatory hospital and department training requirements Reports incidents promptly and effectively Adheres to hand hygiene and infection control protocols Laboratory Testing & Quality Control Identifies patients and specimens accurately prior to testing Performs preventative maintenance on analyzers Troubleshoots instrument errors and malfunctions Performs and evaluates quality control procedures Troubleshoots unacceptable QC values using scientific methodology Processes patient and proficiency samples efficiently Prioritizes routine, urgent, and STAT testing Reports critical or abnormal results immediately to clinicians Communicates relevant patient information to healthcare professionals Specimen Collection Performs venipunctures and capillary punctures as needed Assists with specimen collection when requested Evaluates specimen acceptability for testing Educates patients and staff on proper specimen collection procedures Teamwork & Operations Assists coworkers as needed Maintains organized and safe workstations Supports supervisory duties in the absence of leadership Maintains accurate records and reporting Participates in continuing education and training Trains and orients new employees and students Assists in development of new testing protocols and procedures Utilizes supplies and reagents cost-effectively Safety & Compliance Adheres to all laboratory and hospital safety regulations Maintains patient safety regarding sharps and hazardous materials Helps prevent patient falls, slips, and trips Provides accommodations for elderly patients when necessary Ensures child and infant security protocols are followed Demonstrates awareness of hearing and communication needs in elderly patients Supports pain management awareness and response Physical Requirements Occasionally lifts up to 20 pounds Frequently handles laboratory equipment and specimens Frequently reaches, grasps, and distinguishes colors Occasionally requires depth perception and distance judgment Behavioral Attributes Achievement motivation Attention to detail Flexibility Initiative Self-confidence Customer service orientation Interpersonal effectiveness Teamwork Analytical thinking Information seeking Requirements Education & Certification Requirements Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) Associate degree in Science Completion of clinical training in an approved Medical Technology program (or equivalent) ASCP registration preferred Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or related Chemical/Physical/Biological Science Completion of approved clinical laboratory training OR Associate degree with MLS/MT registration and required laboratory training Registration through ASCP, AAB, HEW, or AMT preferred Required Skills Strong verbal and written English communication skills Additional languages preferred Basic computer proficiency Ability to safely operate laboratory equipment including: Photometer Spectrograph Colorimeter Microscope 0119
