This position serves as a technical subject matter expert for the Radiological Controls organization, helping ensure radiological work is performed in accordance with approved procedures, regulatory requirements, and ALARA principles.You will directly support the continued effectiveness and improvement of the WIPP Radiation Protection Program while providing technical guidance across radiological work planning, waste shipment, dosimetry, instrumentation, radioactive material release, count room activities, and program assessments.Key Responsibilities:Provide technical health physics support to the WIPP Radiological Controls department as a subject matter expertEnsure radiological support for WIPP operations is conducted in accordance with approved procedures, ALARA principles, and 10 CFR 835 requirementsAssist with implementation and continuous improvement of the WIPP radiological control programSupport radiological work controls for operational activities, including review and technical input for safe work executionProvide technical support related to waste characterization and shipment activitiesSupport dosimetry, instrumentation, radioactive material release, count room operations, and assigned program assessmentsEvaluate radiological control practices and identify opportunities to improve safety, compliance, and operational performanceInterface with Radiological Controls personnel, operations teams, and project stakeholders to resolve technical issuesInterpret and apply radiation protection procedures, regulatory requirements, and industry best practicesPromote a strong safety culture and ensure work planning aligns with ALARA and Radiation Protection Program objectivesRequired Qualifications:Bachelor's degree in Health Physics, Engineering, Science, or a related fieldMinimum of ten (10) years of related experience as a Radiological Engineer, Radiological Control Engineer, Health Physicist, or equivalentCurrent standing as a Certified Health Physicist (CHP)Strong knowledge of radiological control principles, radiation protection program requirements, and ALARA implementationWorking knowledge of 10 CFR 835Experience supporting radiological work planning, field execution, or operational health physics activitiesStrong technical writing, communication, and problem-solving skillsAbility to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams in a regulated operational environmentPreferred Background:Previous WIPP Project experienceDOE, nuclear, radiological operations, or waste management experienceExperience with waste characterization and shipmentExperience with dosimetry, instrumentation, count room operations, or radioactive material releaseExperience supporting radiation protection program assessments, corrective actions, and continuous improvement initiativesWork Environment:100% onsite position located in Carlsbad, New MexicoSupports the WIPP project and Radiological Controls organizationHighly regulated radiological and environmental operations settingField and programmatic support role requiring interaction with operations, Radiological Controls, and project stakeholdersWork involves technical review, procedure compliance, program improvement, and support of safe radiological work executionWhy This Role:This is a high-impact opportunity for an experienced Certified Health Physicist to support one of the nation's most important radiological and environmental operations missions.
