Coffee Roaster

Village Roaster is hiring a full-time coffee roaster for the first time in about eight years. We are a neighborhood coffee roastery and café that roasts approximately 4,000 pounds of coffee per month on a Diedrich IR-12 roaster with a Vortex water quench systemWe roast around 20 different coffee origins throughout the week, with most of our coffee sold directly to our walk-in retail customers. A smaller portion of our production supports wholesale accounts and larger customer sales.This is a great opportunity for someone who loves coffee, takes pride in consistent production, and wants to become part of a long-standing local business. For the right person, there may also be opportunities to take on additional responsibilities, projects, or growth initiatives within the business.ResponsibilitiesThe coffee roaster will be responsible for helping manage daily and weekly roasting production, including:Roasting coffee on a Diedrich IR-12 production roasterFollowing established roast profiles and production schedulesMaintaining consistency across multiple origins and blendsMonitoring roast quality, timing, color, development, and batch recordsPreparing green coffee for roastingOrganizing roasted coffee for retail, wholesale, and production needsCleaning and maintaining the roaster and roasting areaA mechanical mind to troubleshoot equipment and make quick repairs to keep the production going.Following food safety, workplace safety, and quality control proceduresCommunicating with managers about inventory, production needs, and quality issuesHelping maintain a clean, organized, and professional roasting workspaceHelping with coffee education and staff trainingAssisting with green coffee organization and inventorySupporting wholesale customersHelping develop new blends or seasonal offeringsWorking on projects to improve production, sales, systems, or business growthAssisting with packaging, retail support, or other roastery operations as neededIdeal candidates will have:Experience roasting coffee, preferably in a production environmentStrong attention to detailInterest in coffee quality, consistency, and continuous improvementAbility to follow systems, recipes, and production standardsComfort working around commercial roasting equipmentGood communication skillsAbility to work independently and stay organizedReliability and strong work ethicInterest in being part of a local coffee businessPreferred but not required:Experience on a Diedrich roasterExperience with production roastingExperience with green coffee, cupping, profiling, or quality controlExperience in a café, roastery, food production, or specialty coffee environmentInterest in helping grow the business beyond roastingPhysical RequirementsThis job requires regular physical work, including:Lifting and moving bags, buckets, and containers of coffee weighing up to 135 lbs with the assistance of electric lifts.Standing for extended periodsWorking around heat, machinery, smoke, and roasting equipmentBending, reaching, carrying, and organizing inventoryMaintaining a clean and safe production environmentPay: $24.02 - $29.00 per hourBenefits:Dental insuranceHealth insurancePaid time offWork Location: In person
