AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) is a national service program dedicated to ending poverty by building the capacity of nonprofit organizations and public agencies. VISTA’s mission is to strengthen and supplement efforts in low-income communities to eliminate and alleviate poverty by engaging volunteers from all walks of life, all geographical areas, and all age groups in a year of full-time service. By joining Volunteer Corps at L.A. Works, you will be placed with one of our nonprofit partner organizations to serve for 12 months and tasked with a capacity-building project such as: creating sustainable systems to expand services, recruiting community members to volunteer in local programs, establishing a database of program alumni, and/or developing partnerships to bring new economic opportunities in LA county. Relocation Allowance - If you move 50+ miles from your home to a new community, you receive relocation travel assistance and a settling-in allowance. End of Service Award - Choose between the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award ($6,095) to pay for education expenses or a cash stipend ($1,800). Healthcare Benefit - Choose between reimbursement for healthcare or a healthcare plan. Dental and vision are also included. Professional Development - Receive in-person and virtual professional development opportunities from L.A. Works and AmeriCorps VISTA throughout the year. Eligibility Requirements Be 18 years or older Pass a national service criminal history check Hold one of the following citizenship statuses: US citizen, US National, Lawful Permanent Resident Aliens and persons residing in a state that have the following legal residency classifications: refugee, asylum or asylee, temporary protected status, or deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) status Western Justice Center has a history of work in movements to advance equity and justice for structurally disadvantaged communities to join our team. Member Duties : Assist the Project Manager in a five-year project to achieve the following goals: (1) reduce conflicts that impede student success; (2) reduce the number of behavioral citations, suspensions, expulsions and unexcused absences resulting from more traditional forms of school discipline; (3) improve student social and emotional learning; (4) improve school climate, including methods that foster student safety and support; (5) collect demonstrative evidence of program impact and effectiveness, including through participatory research; and (6) use conflict resolution education as an avenue for academic and career advancement. x Support the Project Manager in all training, facilitation and implementation of WJC programs with participating PUSD schools, working closely with PUSD designated staff, after school partners and student leaders to support each school site effort. And, provide ongoing support for those school site teams through: (1) coaching and mentorship on how to recruit, support, and empower student peer mediators and community- building circle facilitators; (2) partnering with PUSD to ensure that qualitative and quantitative data demonstrating program impact and effectiveness is collected and utilized on a school-site and/or district-wide level; (3) consulting and onsite facilitation in cases of complex inter-groXp conflicW; (4) collaboraWing ZiWh PUSD·s disWricW leadership team to ensure consistency and cross-pollination across the participating school sites; and (5) providing access to WJC curriculum materials on School Tools and/or available for pilot testing. Other responsibilities as assigned by your supervisor that are needed for the project to succeed.
