Fingerprint Technician Specialist (AFIS) - EXAM

DefinitionUnder general supervision, is responsible for serving as an AFIS specialist within the Division of Police; performs related duties as required.Examples of Work(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)Administers and maintains the AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System) computer system;Operates, backs-up, trouble shoots problems, and performs minor repairs on criminal identification computer systems (e.g., AFIS, Mugshot system, Livescan, LEADS, Burroughs);Drafts various reports and memos;Maintains (e.g., updates, converts, purges) files and generates statistics regarding Identification Unit activities;Represents Division of Police and Identification Unit at meetings, presentations, and tours;Liaisons with computer manufacturers, supply vendors, external identification professionals, outside police jurisdictions, City law enforcement, and court agencies;Provides quality assurance of fingerprint submissions;Assures timely submissions of fingerprint and ID information to state and federal agencies;May testify in court regarding fingerprint identification.Minimum QualificationsPossession of a bachelor's degree in information technology or other closely related field, and one (1) year of experience in fingerprint identification utilizing an AFIS computer system. Substitution(s): Additional years of experience in fingerprint identification utilizing an AFIS computer system may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.Possession of a valid driver's license.Possession of LEADS/BCI certification by the end of the probationary period.Knowledge, Skills, AbilitiesConsiderable knowledge of fingerprints and palm prints; considerable knowledge of computer systems, hardware, and network functions; considerable knowledge of AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System) computer programs; skill to obtain, compare, and match fingerprints; ability to read and comprehend memoranda, technical reports, and textbooks; ability to copy numbers and letters accurately; ability to write detailed and comprehensive technical reports; ability to communicate verbally about fingerprints and related computer systems to others, making oneself understood; ability to file records according to an alphanumeric system.Test/Job Contact InformationThe names of the applicants passing this administration of this exam will be used to create a NEW, OPEN COMPETITIVE, eligible list for this classification. Questions regarding this process can be directed to the Civil Service Commission Test Center at 614-645-7439.The examination process will consist of a computerized exam weighted 100% covering reading comprehension, problem sensitivity, logic and reasoning, information ordering, English usage, grammar, and punctuation, fingerprinting definitions and computer programs, and 2019/2021 Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel.The exam is expected to be administered in early June 2026. Approved applicants will be notified by mail/email of their scheduled test date and time.All applicants must complete all phases of the testing process in order to receive a final score. The names of all candidates who pass this examination will remain on the eligible list for two years, unless the eligible list is replaced prior to or extended beyond the two years. If a candidate's name is certified and the candidate is to be considered for employment, the hiring process will include one or more interviews, a criminal background check, and a pre-employment drug test.
