By combining challenging academics with a rich array of extra-curricular programming, Stanford Summer Session successfully shares the University’s culture of innovation, academic excellence, and global responsibility.Summer Tutor Position OverviewStanford Summer Session provides tutoring, academic workshops, curated academically oriented experiences, and academic advising for students enrolled in Stanford courses during the summer. Summer Session is hiring approximately 15 Stanford graduate, including a few undergraduate students as Summer Tutors for students who enroll in Summer Session courses.During Summer 2026, Summer Tutors will primarily work with students in two ways; Tutors will hold regular drop-in tutoring hours on campus, and will design and lead several academic workshops. They will also offer a limited number of tutoring appointments online. Summer Tutors often tutor multiple courses and subject areas. In addition to holding regular by-appointment and drop-in tutoring sessions, Summer Tutors are expected to design, promote, lead, and support academic workshops. Drawing upon their academic experience at Stanford, educational interests (research and internships), Tutors will have the opportunity to lead student groups and clubs based on these areas. Tutor schedules are established on a weekly basis by the Assistant Director of Academic Programs and are based on tutor availability and program needs. While the specific hours are flexible, this job is tasked at 15-20 hours per week–in person and online—with evening and some weekend availability. Please note that these are estimates only and you are not guaranteed a particular number of hours per week. As a non-exempt employee, you are subject to overtime pursuant to state and federal wage and hour laws. The majority of the work will be completed in person.All tutors must be available to begin preparing for this role on Monday, June 15, 2026. Tutors will be assigned to the 8-week summer term, ending Saturday, August 15, 2026.This position will provide Stanford students experience working with student participants of varying backgrounds—from advanced high school students to graduate students, and from more than 40 countries around the world. Summer Tutors will have the opportunity to boost students’ confidence, hone their one-on-one teaching, and develop and teach at least one academic workshop.Essential FunctionsSubject Area Tutoring. Summer Tutors provide by-appointment and drop-in tutoring to Summer Session students in STEM courses and in Writing. Drop-in sessions will be held in-person on campus, while online sessions will take place over Zoom.Academic Workshops.Summer Tutors develop, promote, and lead in-person workshops based on the needs of the Summer Session student population. Most academic workshop topics are set prior to summer and include communication with instructors, time management, and academic writing. Tutors are responsible for developing and delivering workshop content, and, if interested, can also propose new workshop ideas. Tutors are expected to engage in the planning and leading of at least one workshop.Review Sessions and Study Halls.Summer Tutors may be asked to host, support, and/or supervise group Review Sessions and Study Halls for Summer Session students. Review Sessions can either be facilitated or open sessions to help students prepare for specific exams or assignments, while Study Halls provide an academic environment for students to work on homework individually or collaborate on group projects.Student Groups.Summer Tutors may be asked to create educational content and lead interest groups by utilizing their academic experience at Stanford, educational interests, research, internships, and network. These Tutor led student groups will meet on a set, mutually agreed upon schedule during summer quarter.Role Model and Leadership. As student staff members are highly visible within the Summer Session community, Summer Tutors are expected to conduct themselves professionally at all times. Students often seek advice from tutors and therefore tutors should be active and effective listeners and be able to refer issues of concern to appropriate Summer Session professional staff members. As academic role models, Summer Tutors should welcome and encourage openness to differences of race, class, gender, religion, sexual orientation, and nationality among program participants. All tutors are expected to comply with all University policies including but not limited to, Administrative Guide policy 1.7.2 Consensual Sexual or Romantic Relationships In the Workplace and Educational Setting.Administrative Duties.Summer Tutors attend a weekly staff meeting and assist with Summer Session tutoring center outreach. They are also expected to complete tracking and assessment paperwork in a timely manner. Employees may also perform other duties as assigned.Terms of EmploymentOutside Obligations.Summer Tutors may pursue outside work or other activities on- or off- campus. Staff must disclose information about their outside work and courses to the Assistant Director of Academic Programs. Tutors are expected to avoid activities, including other employment, that may result in a conflict of commitment as outlined in Stanford Administrative Guide 1.5.2: Conflict of Commitment. Other jobs at Stanford, combined with Summer Session hours cannot exceed 40 hours per week.Alcohol and Drug Policy. It is the policy of Stanford University to maintain a drug-free workplace and campus. Summer Tutors are not allowed to consume, possess, or be under the influence of alcohol, marijuana, or controlled substances per Stanford Administrative Guide 2.2.8: Controlled Substances and Alcohol. Failure to abide by this policy will result in immediate termination of employment.Conduct and Policy Enforcement. Summer Tutors will adhere to, administer, and enforce policies and procedures as outlined in the Fundamental Standard, Honor Code, Student Alcohol and other Drugs Policy, and all other Summer Session and University policies as outlined in the Administrative Guide. Tutors are expected to follow all University and Summer Session policies, including Protection of Minors policies, to maintain a safe and trustworthy environment for all students. Any actions compromising student safety or trust may result in immediate termination. Additional information regarding conduct and applicable policies for Summer Session students is detailed within the Summer Session program handbooks.Training.All Summer Tutors are required to attend and actively participate in staff training sessions, to be held during the week prior to the start of the Summer Quarter (June 15-20, 2026). The training schedule will be determined by majority tutor availability, and may include in-person, and virtual (synchronous or asynchronous) sessions. Completion of Protection of Minors training is mandatory prior to interacting with students. More details will be communicated closer to summer.Stanford Affiliation. Summer Tutors must be enrolled Stanford students or recent Stanford graduates.Background Check. Staff must successfully complete a Live Scan fingerprint background check before Welcome Weekend. The Live Scan fingerprinting should be completed by June 5, 2026, to allow sufficient time for processing and results to be received by Stanford. Staff who are employed by Stanford after graduation or after it is determined the student will not return to student status must successfully complete a HireRight background check. Employment is contingent upon the successful completion and passing of all required background checks.Working with Minors. Tutors may work closely with high school students, many of whom are minors, and must uphold the highest standards of professionalism, maturity, and integrity. Tutors are expected to follow Stanford’s Protection of Minors policies and guidelines, maintain appropriate boundaries, and act as trustworthy role models. Tutors should consistently demonstrate respect, responsibility, and sound judgment in all interactions with students. Any actions that compromise student safety, trust, or well-being are unacceptable and may result in immediate termination of employment.Ideal CandidateThe successful candidate will have proven academic success and a genuine interest in the subject area(s) they wish to tutor. Graduate students with experience in tutoring or teaching are preferred. There will be opportunities for collaboration among tutors, but most of each tutor’s work will be done individually. As such, the ideal candidate will be highly autonomous and able to multitask to manage multiple assignments. Successful candidates will also demonstrate a positive and motivated work ethic.CompensationThe Summer Tutor position has an hourly pay rate of $33.50/hour for Stanford graduate students and $21/hour for undergraduate students. The Summer Tutor position is tasked at approximately 15-20 hours per week. Please note that these are estimates only and you are not guaranteed a particular number of hours per week. As a non-exempt employee, you are subject to overtime pursuant to state and federal wage and hour laws. Hourly pay is taxable income.
