Research Assistant | Laboratory of Genetics

Organization OverviewThe Laboratory of Genetics, headed by Michael W. Young, studies 24-hour circadian clocks, which time the recurring, daily activities observed in most organisms. These cellular clocks are active in most animal tissues and establish daily rhythms in physiology and behavior. The lab's findings have implications for sleep and mood disorders as well as for dysfunctions related to the timing of gene activities underlying visual functions, locomotion, metabolism, immunity, learning, and memory.OverviewThe Research Assistant will work closely with other members of the laboratory on projects exploring the physiological importance of circadian rhythms, sleep, and aging in Drosophila at the molecular, cellular and organismal levels. They will assist in fly husbandry, tissue dissections, and behavioral analyses, as well as DNA/RNA-seq analysis and confocal imaging. They will produce and analyze data, think critically, get exposure to primary literature, and communicate their research findings.ResponsibilitiesResponsibilities include:Collaborate with other lab members to support ongoing research projectsConduct fly husbandry, including routine care, transfers, stock maintenance and organization of fly culturesAssist with experimental setup, data collection, analysis and presentation of research findingsMaintain lab equipment and research supplies, including routine upkeep, ordering, pickup and distributionPerform related duties and responsiblities as needed to support efficient laboratory operationsQualificationsREQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:Bachelor's degree in biological sciences or related fieldPrior hands-on laboratory experience working with DrosophilaFamiliarity with basic wet-lab techniques (e.g. pipetting, sterile technique)PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:Experience in molecular biology techniquesBasic coding or data analysis experience (e.g., Python, R)Confocal or fluorescence microscopy experienceThe Rockefeller University is an equal opportunity employer - veterans/individuals with disabilities.
